Like many of you, I don’t own my own place. Instead, I rent a lovely box in New York City for roughly the cost of a kidney each month. And in return, my landlord allows me to store my things there–as long as I don’t do anything to make the space’s stark white walls my own. I asked about wallpaper. I asked about paint. I asked about painting and then repainting the walls white before I moved out—but to no avail. It wasn’t until I sent my landlord some links to The Home Depot’s gorgeous peel & stick wallpaper that he finally said…fine.

Admittedly, I was a bit skeptical of the whole “peel & stick” concept. I can’t even align a stamp correctly on an envelope—and the crookedness drives my OCD through the roof—so I figured that covering an entire wall with what is essentially a giant sticker would be an impossible feat. But GIRL was I wrong.

After a seamless experience in my bedroom, I decided to get some peel & stick magic going on in my living room too. I was able to get the job done solo (okay fine, with the help of a ladder) and super quickly–I didn’t even have to call my Mom once (!!!). It was such a fun Saturday project. I blasted my summer playlist, picked up an iced coffee, opened the windows and just zenned out. Taking the time to make your space your own is the ultimate form of self care. And TBH, it was cheaper than a Sunday brunch.
I will probably never leave this apartment because—not to be dramatic—this wallpaper is prettier than me. But when I do, I can already tell it’s going to peel right off the wall without chipping the paint (and subsequently eating into my security deposit.
