Want to Study Abroad? Here’s What You Should Consider

From the perspective of social media, studying abroad can appear to be a carefree escapade across the globe. The colorful cookie-cutter buildings in Copenhagen and the warm beaches of Mykonos glamorize the study abroad experience. But while studying abroad seems like all fun and games, there’s actually a lot of planning and consideration before jetting off for a semester or two to study in a different country. Studying abroad is a decision in which you need to consider a lot of factors, from your finances to your language skills.

In the months before studying abroad, I spent a number of hours researching and preparing for the experience. There were many nights of Google searching and spreadsheet making, as well as several conversations with academic advisors, the study abroad office at my college, and seniors who had gone abroad the year before.

Even though it’s a big decision, studying abroad can also be a great opportunity to experience different cultures, gain a new academic perspective, and become more independent. But is studying abroad right for you? Here’s what you should consider before deciding to study abroad.

DEGREE REQUIREMENTS AND ON-CAMPUS COMMITMENTS

Before committing to studying abroad, make sure that you’ll be able to complete your degree. Check your program requirements (for your major, minor, and anything else!) and know what classes you need to take. Your academic advisor can be a helpful resource, as well as students in your major who have already studied abroad.

Also consider what on-campus commitments you have, like sports, clubs, and student jobs. If you hold a job or leadership position, you may have to help find a replacement while you’re away. Sports may impact when and how long you choose to study abroad for. For example, I chose to study abroad for the fall semester because I play a spring sport.

COST

Cost is another important factor to consider about studying abroad. Tuition can vary based on what university you decide to attend, as well as the cost of additional study abroad programs that facilitate social activities, travel, and internships. Housing and food can also be separate from tuition, which will then need to be factored into your budget. Going out and traveling can also be especially costly when studying abroad. Oh, and don’t forget the exchange rate in your budget calculations!

WEEKEND TRIPS

On weekends and breaks, you’ll be able to explore the surrounding areas of your study abroad location. When choosing where you study abroad, it’s important to consider if and where else you want to travel to and how to make that happen. Look at the cities and countries nearby your program and consider where you want to visit. The location of your study abroad school also determines how easy it is to get to the airport, which you may need to consider if frequent travel is in your plans.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Studying abroad can be a great opportunity to better your language skills, through classes in the country’s language, interaction with the local community, and the chance to live with a host family, if you choose. However, there are also study abroad opportunities in countries that speak English or offer classes in English. Consider if developing your language skills is important to you when choosing where to study abroad. (You might want to download Duolingo, bestie.)
