This App Notifies You When You’re Somewhere a Woman Has Made History

Women’s accomplishments throughout history are not nearly given as much attention as needed. But now, there’s an app hoping to change that! SPARK, an organization by and for women between the ages of 13 to 22, has partnered up with Google to bring you the Field Trip App, which will send notifications to your phone whenever you are somewhere near where a woman achieved something great. Better yet, you can contribute to the app to grow their database of historically significant women!

The project began after it was noted how few women were honored in Google’s famous doodles—only 17 percent before this initiative started. Google both agreed to help improve this imbalance as well as fund the research to go into this app. To take advantage of this awesome collaboration, all you have to do is download the app and then switch on the “history” option. Then, your phone will notify you any time you’re near the area where badass woman literally made history.

The app currently features over one hundred women in different places all around the globe and they’re looking to expand this database even further. SPARK is currently accepting new submissions about women of the past along with their location and a description of what they did to go down in history. Send a write-up of 150 to 300 words to sparkteam@sparksummit.com if you want to help improve the visibility of women’s history!

The girl power in this app is totally awesome! We are so excited to learn about the different women featured and see what other women the app eventually adds. Women’s historical achievements are often overlooked, so this app is a great step to promoting much-needed visibility. We already have the app downloaded to our phones, and you need to do the same!
