The Best Of: NYFWÂ
New York
Kicking off the fashion month, New York always offers a slightly more conservative, but nonetheless fresh and exciting plethora of shows.
The names you should learn
Bringing a piece of Australia to NYC, Zimmermann was inspired by her suburban youth spent customising outfits with her friends. The collection indeed does have a slightly crafty feel to it, but in the best way possible! Next Spring is about to be the season of ruffles and delicate materials, and Zimmermann sure does those two well.Â
The designers over at Creatures of the Wind were inspired by strong female figures, rock stars with a lot of personality. The collection conveys this point through combining feminine figures with flashy metallics, managing to be sweet yet stark at the same time.
Self-Portrait was brought to the spotlight by the numerous fashion bloggers falling in love with the brand’s signature lace dresses. The current collection, however, showcased much less of the conventional dress silhouette own to the brand, offering a more edgy approach to the signature lace.
Launching only this year, Cinq Ă Sept is definitely a newcomer to look out for. The collection is inspired by an independent woman, who can make old vintage clothes feel new and impactful.Â
The household names
Coach managed to completely stray from it’s former “preppy” image by introducing a collection inspired by rebellious girl gangs, fans of all things rock ’n’ roll! However, amidst all the studs and leather, the collection still manages to maintain a spirit of femininity by incorporating delicate ruffles and bows.
Thanks to Altuzarra, you can now wear your 5-a-day, and why not throw in some snake print while you’re at it! SS’17 at Altuzarra was all about mixing unexpected prints, and covering sophisticated gowns with fruit embroidery, to add that bit of cheek and make the collection flirty and fun.
Phillip Lim brought the swimwear-as-streetwear trend to the runway in a way which makes this trend seem wearable even outside of California. By combining quasi-swimwear with jackets and jeans or skirts, Lim takes this trend from the beachside to the city, and it works.
Many got their breath (and hearts) stolen at the Rodarte show. As per usual, the brand’s ensembles maintained just the right balance of whimsical and edgy. Allegedly, the collection was inspired by bees, which is evident in ever-present flower motifs, trousers adorned with safety pins, and hive imagery finding its way into the garments in various clever ways. Â
We could also address the elephants in the room that is NYFW, such as the fainting models at the Yeezy show, or Marc Jacobs and his flirting with cultural appropriation, but we would much rather focus on the incredible talent that is out there for us to admire. We at Her Campus definitely recommend looking into the other looks presented in these shows, as this is only a small sample of what these designers have up their sleeves for the upcoming Spring/Summer season!
Stay inspired. HCXO
