HC Travels: Trier, Germany!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Aberdeen chapter.

Within the heart of Europe you’ll find many beautiful places that are definitely worth a visit. However, next to all of the better known, larger cities such as Paris, Amsterdam or Vienna, there is a sympathetic little city right on the edge of Germany, that should be on top of your travel bucket list: Trier!

Trier, the birth place of Karl Marx – yes, you can visit his former home – is the oldest city in Germany and therefore keeps a special atmosphereWalking through the city centre you’ll get the feeling of being back in ancient Rome and if youre lucky enough, you’ll even spot a Roman. Or let’s say some poor student dressed up as a Roman. It’s the perfect mixture of cosiness, history and sunshine and for this reason I will present you just a few of a thousand reasons why Trier should be your next getaway destination:

  1. It’s Instagram worthy!

Porta Nigra – the largest Roman city gate north of the Alps (google: http://saarburger-hof.de/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/TRier-Porta-Nigra.jpg)

Whether you’re interested in history or you’re just looking for some Instagram worthy pictures, Trier is the place for you! Since the city offers plenty of Roman buildings, such as the Porta Nigra, it will make you feel like you are in little Rome. Also, since a lot of tourists come to Trier each year the city is well taken care of. It is colourful and diverse. You can go down to the river Mosel, take a rest in beautiful gardens or visit some famous monuments such as the Roman bath ruins or the Roman amphitheatre.

  1. Wine… do I need to say more?

People in Trier love wine and for this reason you can taste all kinds of wine everywhere. In the summertime there are plenty of wine booths within the city centre where people like to stop for a glass of wine at any time of the day. In addition to that you can of course go to several wine tastings, or just take a walk along the vineyards. Wine is an essential part of the summer festivals as well and there is even a wine festival just to appreciate Trier’s favourite beverage. I do recommend going there!

  1. Despite its age, it’s a young and active student city!

Once you’ve arrived in Trier, there is actually a lot to do there. Especially in the summer time students like to hang out in all of the parks and gardens to have a barbecue and to get active! There are a lot of beach volleyball and basketball courts, and the Mosel makes an excellent cycling route. As for the party- and nightlife there are many summer festivals and a variety of bars and pubs to go to. Pub crawls are especially popular in Trier as each pub has their special drink, which is always super affordable. When it comes to freshers week there is even an event where you can earn your “Beer Bachelor” once you been to ten pubs and had a beer there – yes, next to the wine, Germans of course still love beer as well!

I hope I’ve convinced you to visit Trier, it really is a beautiful place with a lot to offer! HCXO<3
