HCAU: Hi Niamh! We want to know all about your university experiences, some of your likes and dislikes, and just generally more about you as a person! How are you feeling?
Niamh: Hey! I’m feeling great! So excited to be back in Aberdeen! I’m ready to jump back into Uni and hopefully have a great year!
HCAU: I’m glad to hear that, let’s jump right in and get started! What made you want to join HCAU?
Niamh: If I’m honest, I joined HCAU in the second half of my second year to help make some more friends at university. Striking up a conversation with a stranger is not something I’ve ever felt super comfortable doing, so I thought joining a society like HCAU would help me make more friends outside of my course and it definitely worked!
HCAU: What about being social sec? What made you decide to go for this role? Any exciting plans up your sleeve?
Niamh: I was the vice social sec last year and I just loved the role, so I decided to re-apply this year for social sec – although I prefer the social team because Kate and I are definitely a dream team! Weirdly enough, I’m not the most social of butterflies, but I think this is a great strength when it comes to organising events because I know what it feels like to walk into socials hardly knowing anyone. I always keep this in mind when planning our get togethers.
As for plans for this year, Kate and I have whipped up some absolute beauties and I can’t wait to share our plans! But we don’t want to spoil the surprises, so you’ll have to come back and see what we have up our sleeves for this year!
HCAU: We can’t wait! We hope you’ve been enjoying your summer, have you been up to anything interesting?
Niamh: My summer was mostly spent out walking, watching Netflix or reading due to COVID, but it was nice to relax a little! I also graduated over the summer which was super exciting, but we didn’t get a ceremony which was sad.
HCAU: All good things must come to an end, and the end of summer starts with going back to university. Any advice for newcomers coming to Aberdeen University?
Niamh: Join clubs and societies! It can be quite difficult to make friends on your course if, like me, you aren’t an expert in striking up conversations with strangers. Societies and clubs can be great for this and because everyone there is in a similar position in wanting to meet people, so join all the clubs you can during freshers and find your favourites to keep!

Favourite Movie?
My all-time favourite movie since I was little is ‘The Day after Tomorrow’. I have no idea why an end-of-life film is a favourite, but cosying up on the couch with hot chocolate, a hot water bottle and a film about a climate emergency has just always been good for me!
Main meal OR Dessert?
Main meal definitely!
Favourite Aberdeen night out?
I always love anything themed, so society night outs are always fun for me! I just love an excuse to dress up as something utterly daft and make a fool of myself!
