Welcome To The Committee: Freya Gowans

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Aberdeen chapter.

HCAU Profile: Freya Gowans!

Name: Freya Gowans

Studies and year: MSc in Sex, Gender, and Violence (Masters)

Position: Vice Social Secretary

Just before the new term began Holly had the opportunity to pin Freya down to one spot and have a chat about all things HC, uni and summer. Here’s what they both had to say!

HC: Hey Freya! Firstly, how are you finding being Her Campus Aberdeen’s new Vice Social Secretary and why did you want to be part of the committee?

FG: So far being HC’s new vice social sec has been fab! It’s been a lot of prep for Freshers’ with the Societies Fayre and our first big events, but it’s been lots of fun to dive straight into this new experience. I wanted to become part of the committee because I’ve really enjoyed being a part of HC over the years and thought for my final year why not just go for a committee position and I’m so glad that I did!

HC: How long have you been a member or Her Campus Aberdeen and why did you join?

FG: This will be my 3rd year as a Her Campus member. I decided to join because I knew a few other girls who had been members before and it sounded really good fun and a different kind of society to be a part of.

HC: You graduated in June and now you are doing your Masters, so you know a lot about studying in Aberdeen! What advice would you give to new Aberdeen University students?

FG: This will be my 5th year at uni and I do feel that I have a lot of wisdom to give new students! I think firstly is to stay relaxed in 1st and 2nd year, obviously still work hard but don’t put too much pressure on yourself, you can save that for 3rd and 4th year. Also, what happens in first year doesn’t have to set the tone for your whole time at university, you don’t have to keep the same friends, do the same course or stay a part of the same societies for example, you can start fresh every year if you want to. And finally, don’t be afraid to cut people off, this isn’t high school anymore and you don’t have to feel awkward about your relationship with someone because you’re going to see them in the school hallway every day. If someone’s not making you happy, you don’t need them in your life!

HC: You were also a member of Aberdeen University Cheerleading Squad, what is your favourite thing about being a part of the squad?

FG: Being a part of cheerleading definitely had its ups and downs, with its early morning or late night trainings and the stereotypical bitchiness that came with having 50 young women in a sports club, there were a lot of times when I wanted to call it quits. But overall my favourite thing was being the Pom dance captain and the feeling of performing each routine at competitions, also our cute af uniforms.

HC: We’ve seen from your amazing pictures on Facebook and Instagram that you’ve been travelling this summer! What was your favourite place you visited?

FG: My favourite place from my travels was definitely Koh Phangan, the Thai island, it was so nice after weeks of travelling around cities to finally be by the beach and put my feet in the sea and the full moon party was insane, it was definitely the best week for me!

HC: OK, now for some quick-fire questions:

HC: cats or dogs?

FG: Dogs all the way

HC: Sweet or savoury?

FG: Savoury

HC: What’s your favourite colour?

FG: Blue

HC: Favourite film?

FG: Atonement

HC: Favourite HCAU memory?

FG: So many to choose from! But I think I’ll go with the 2nd HC birthday party, was definitely a mad one!

Thanks for chatting with us Freya!
