How to Stay Fit This Holiday Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Adelphi chapter.

Don’t we all just love the Holidays? We get to relax with our families, inhale Bath & Body Work’s holiday candles (Any other Winter Candy Apple fans?) and most importantly, EAT! Now, eating during the holidays is probably what most of us look forward to the most, but dread once we start to see the aftermath. We eat, we drink, eat some more, and then we end up feeling like bloated whales by the time it’s all over. There’s just so much deliciousness in only two months, that it would be impossible to ignore. Luckily, you don’t have to even consider having string beans over holiday ham. We’ve come up with several tips that will help you stay fit without depriving yourself, during the beloved Holidays!

Avoid the food baby: If you’ve been away at college living off of Ramen Noodles for the past couple of months, then we don’t blame you for wanting to attack every single dish that comes out of the oven. You should though, be mindful of what you’re eating because as much as you don’t think about it, the calories are adding up. If you know you really want to enjoy your mother’s homemade eggnog, then don’t eat all twelve of those Pillsbury sugar cookies. It’s okay to indulge once in a while, especially during the holidays, but make sure you’re keeping track of how much you’re indulging in.

Make it a family affair. You know the saying: The more the merrier! As you gather together with your family, plan active things to do. Walk around the neighborhood to look at which houses are already in the competitive Christmas decorating mood. If there’s snow by you, then have a snowball fight or build Olaf with your sister!

Keep moving “But, If I’m shopping that means I’m going to be doing a lot of walking, and that’s basically like working out, so therefore I don’t even need to go to the gym today.” Does that sound familiar? Let’s admit it, we’ve definitely said this to ourselves a few too many times. With all the holiday shopping, who really wants to work out even more? Surprisingly, exercising actually will help us deal with the added stress and give us energy to tackle those sales racks. Of course, It’ll also help us manage our weight around those yummy-calorie-packed Starbucks holiday drinks.

If you don’t have the time to go to the gym, bring the gym to you! YouTube has great workout videos you can follow along with and will get your metabolism ready to burn those calories in no time. You can do these in the comfort of your own home in between baking and wrapping sessions. Here are two of our favorite YouTube Fitness channels that you should definitely subscribe to!

Find an App: There are tons of fitness apps out there for your iPhone, Android or iPad that can help you monitor and track your workout progress in order to stay fit during the holidays. From RunKeeper to Bit Timer, you can find the option that is right for you!

Keeping your calorie count in check and staying motivated to work out during the holiday season is always tough, but by following these simple ways to stay fit this holiday season, you’ll be able to enjoy tasty treats without feeling like a snowball. We wish you the best of luck with your fitness goals and we can’t wait to see those hot bods during and after the holidays!
