Now that in-person learning is starting up again, I’ve found myself reflecting on my time as a writer for Her Campus, and I thought I’d share my experience for anyone who might be considering joining their school’s chapter of HC as well!
I joined Adelphi’s chapter of Her Campus back in February because I wanted to get more involved on campus, but I was afraid of putting too much on my plate. As an English major, Her Campus jumped out at me almost immediately when I realized that I could combine my love of writing with an on-campus organization.
I was very eager to meet the other members and to start writing my articles, but I realized that, unfortunately, my work schedule conflicted with the meetings. I didn’t let it bother me too much, though, as I was still part of the group chat with the other members, and even while writing my articles asynchronously, I felt connected to the organization.
Looking back, not being able to attend the in-person meetings somewhat foreshadowed the situation for the upcoming fall semester: we’ll be attending meetings over Zoom, but I’m confident that our chapter will be able to foster the same positive, easy-going energy that is prevalent in our group chat.
One of my reservations about joining Her Campus was not being able to meet deadlines – I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to come up with article ideas every week on top of completing my classwork and maintaining my job. My fears were quickly put to rest, though, because I found that the writing process was easier than I had anticipated, and it was okay to not have an article idea ready each week. A lot of my article ideas are drawn from my personal life, interests, and inner musings. A main component to writing a great article is to write about things you’re passionate about because there might be someone else out there who also shares that passion or interest.
While I have only been a part of the HC community for about six months, it has given me so much: a sense of community on campus, the opportunity to participate in E-Board elections and become my chapter’s Editor-in-Chief, and a new, creative outlet to fuel my passion for writing.
I’m extremely grateful for the new friendships I’ve made, for getting to have a leadership position, and for the chance to express myself through my articles. If your school has a chapter of Her Campus, I would most definitely recommend checking it out – you never know what opportunities might await!
