From Runway to Real Life: NYFW ’15

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Adelphi chapter.

It’s been a pretty rough winter for us New Yorkers. With all the snow that has been hitting us, it’s been hard to actually get out of bed to put something decent looking on. Luckily, there were several glorious events that occurred the week of Feb. 12-19, which got us really excited for spring wear. Yep, It was New York Fashion Week! NYFW is anticipated every fall and spring by fashionista/os everywhere. It’s the crystal ball of fashion which is usually pretty accurate of what we’ll be wearing for the coming season. The only minor problem is sometimes the fashion trends we see on the runways can be a bit too extreme for us to wear reguarly. Our professors definitely won’t be too approving of an “All-Too-Sheer Dress,” especially when our defense is that we saw Kendall Jenner looking amazing with it on the runway. Well, we couldn’t just give up and settle for the ordinary, so we did our research and dug out several Spring 2015 NYFW trends that we can actually wear in our everyday lives.  Here they are!

Shirtdresses

Designers have re-imagined the classic shape of a shirt with drop waists and high slits with shirtdresses. They’re perfect feminine renditions finished with a slimming tie at the waist and a sweetly flared skirt. Shirtdresses are adventurous and daring, but not too out there. They make the perfect outfit for a picnic by the quad.

Gingham                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          Preppies this is your time to shine! Gingham will continue its reign as one of the most popular patterns this spring. Fall may have brought us proper plaids, but for spring it’s all about tiny checkers. It’s playful, different, and retro, therefore we’re all over it! If you’re looking to wear something casual on a nice spring day go for a Gingham dress or romper.

Obi-inspired Belts

We’ve seen Obi belts fall in and out of fashion several times over the past few years, but this time, it looks like they’re here to stay. They’ve made a reappearance on the Spring 2015 runways. Obi belts are perfect for those of us that aren’t into the stiff buckle belts that dig in at the waist or those who prefer variable length in their belts. Forget about accessories to bring your outfit up a notch, these belts do the job for you! There are many Obi-inspired belts as well if you’re not into the leather look, such as the canvas braid. They’re great for any type of look, day or night. Tie the belt, knot it to the side and you’re good to go.

Comfortable Shoes

The fashion genies have granted our wishes and have continued the comfortable shoes trend. That means if you’re into sneakers or minimal two-strap sandals, you’re reppin’ Spring 2015 runway trends! Sneakers are always a must-have, especially the classic Plimsolls. They’re great for a casual leggings or denim look. You also can’t go wrong with two-strap sandals. They’re simple, retro-inspired and go-tos for those chill spring days.

One-Shoulder/Cold-Shoulder Cuts

It’s time we enhance those sexy shoulders of ours, and what better way with the one-shoulder or cold shoulder style? No more pulling up those tube tops ladies! We’ll be ventilating our upper halves in a way that makes sense and stays on. You can find these cuts in anything from plain tops to dresses. A night out with girlfriends or S.O. are the ideal occasions for you to rock this look. On a beautiful day you can opt for a cold-shoulder cut dress paired with your favorite booties.

Roomy Denim

Jeans will never go out of season so you might as well spice them up with different cuts and styles. This is where the Roomy Denim comes in! It’s all about the cropped and slouchy cut this spring. These jeans are loose-fitting and comfortable for sitting in class all day or grabbing a bite to eat with friends. To really own this look keep your top simple. It’ll create a cool contrast.

Where to find: DrJays.com, Forever21, UrbanOutfitters, ASOS

Price: $25-$50

Fringe

Fringe was the new hot thing last fall and we’re not quite ready to give it up just yet. Whether it’s the frayed edges of a tank top or a full skirt that’ll bring out the ‘20s flapper trend, these attitude-filled pieces are a great way to stand out from the crowd without going overboard. You can rock this trend anywhere, at a BBQ or a beach party. Grab your hat and shades to compliment the fringe and you’ll look hotter than the models wearing it on the runway.

Where to find: Freepeople, Anthropologie, Forever21, Express

Price: $20-$80

We hope you give these trends some consideration when you’re shopping for your spring essentials, but in the meantime, bundle up and think warm thoughts! We know once the snow melts and the sun shines, you’ll be looking like fierce NYFW models all season long.
