Top 5 Pop Diva Role Models

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Adelphi chapter.

Believe it or not, not all famous females have twerked their way to the spotlight or flashed their bare behinds just to land a magazine gig (No Kim K we clearly aren’t talking about you, Jeez). There are many women artists who we, as Collegiettes, can look up to as our role models. These five women are successful strong artists who each possess admirable qualities. Here they are!

Pink

Some may call Pink crazy, but that’s why we love her. She’s different from other artists and does things her way, rather than being managed by people in what they think her fans might want to see and hear. Her song “Stupid Girls” talks about her not wanting to fit in, and how she’d much rather be an outcast with ambition. Pink has other songs that mention strong and successful women who prefer working hard rather than using their good looks to get to the top. It’s no wonder she was Billboard’s Woman of the Year in 2013!

Beyoncé

You know we have to bow down to our Queen! YAAAAAS SLAY!! Beyonce is the perfect modern day example of a woman who can do it all and run the world. She’s driven, talented, passionate, focused, and you can tell she’s pushed herself to her extreme limits to conquer the odds and continues to do so. Not only does she make her fans happy, but her family as well. She’s a dedicated mother and wife who’s had a decade-long string of successful solo hits and albums. Bey’s her own Bo$$ B*tch and wakes up flawless, how can you not admire her?

Taylor Swift

Now there’s only one person who’s inspired us to shake off all the “haters” this year and that’s been Ms. Swift! Taylor is inspiring as it gets. She’s faced many critics throughout her years of being in the entertainment business, but she’s never let them come in the way of changing her style in the types of songs she’s known for writing. Yes, they’re mostly about guys, but they scream raw emotions and part of being a strong woman is accepting these emotions. She’s never been photographed coming out of nightclubs drunk/high, rather she’s photographed surprising her fans in hospitals, at their wedding showers, and even at their homes! She’s constantly giving back and continues to hold her title as Santa Swift for being so generous and sending her fans gifts, which have ranged from money to pay back loans to clothes from Barneys! Can we just be best friends with you Tay?

Lorde

For artists’ like Lorde, there’s a huge pressure to look intact and perfect all the time. One of the many things we love about Lorde is that she knows she’ll never be royal (pun intended). The young pop-rock singer makes sure that her fans don’t feel those same pressures and she’s very vocal about promoting a positive body image. She recently tweeted two photos of herself wherin one went through photoshop and the other without, to show that imperfections don’t make us any less beautiful. Lorde has her own style and isn’t afraid to express herself the way she wants to. We think you’re awesome Lorde, and you should totally let us borrow your entire lipstick collection.

Demi Lovato

2010 was a rough year for Demi Lovato. The singer checked herself into rehab and revealed to us about her battle with anorexia, cutting herself, bullying, and so much more. Demi proved she was a fighter willing to ask for help and inspired so many teens, adults, and even elders to share their stories too. Demi successfully fought her way back from the brink of self-destruction and helped so many people overcome their struggles. What’s most courageous about Demi is how she was willing to open herself up to the world, vulnerability and all with her song “Skyscraper.” Now she’s a powerful role-model!

It’s safe to say, we have a good handful of female artists we can look up to. They’ve each turned their fame into something positive and have used it to share messages to us all. In their own ways they’ve touched the hearts of many. With song lyrics, giving back, or small tweets, they’ve done big incredible things.
