There are so many assumptions about girls who attend all-girls Catholic high schools, like that we are all stuck up, we are all rich or that we are “Jesus freaks”. Most of these are just opinions people have without knowing the girls who go there.

This is what it’s really like going to a Catholic school:

1.    No one is a Jesus freak

Sure, some people are really religious, like go to church EVERY Sunday religious.  There’s nothing wrong with that! Although we did have to take religion classes every semester and go to church as a school once a month, it was kind of fun and we mostly just laugh at it now. And no, we don’t know everything about the Bible, half of us think Moses and Noah are the same people.

2.   Most of us aren’t rich

Just because we pay to have a private education does not mean we are rich, some of our parents can just afford it, some parents make sacrifices and some students get scholarships or sponsors. And unlike public schools who get a lot of assistance, we had to pay separately for our books, trips, and extracurricular activities. 3.   It’s more laid back

Most people might be surprised that there aren’t many fights or arguments. I think it’s because we don’t have to deal with some of the immature drama caused by girls fighting over boys. For the most part, we were all chill and there weren’t many cliques, everyone talked to everyone and if your friends weren’t in your class there was always someone for you to talk to.

4.   Nuns

The nuns aren’t really that bad. A lot of them are old and are more like your typical grandmothers; they always look out for you, feed you, pray for you and yes, some were a little feisty.

5.   Uniforms

This was personally my favorite part of going to Catholic school. Waking up every day and not having to worry about what you’re going to wear was the best feeling ever. You could literally get dressed in 10-15 minutes and no one cared what you wore or how you looked because we all looked the same.

6.   No Boys

Not having boys around definitely took away from the pressure of growing up in high school. You didn’t have to be embarrassed asking for a pad or hiding it. You didn’t have to care if you looked nice coming to school. You didn’t have distractions in class from class clowns. This didn’t mean that we never interact with boys, most girls had boyfriends that they would just meet after school because there was an all boys school not too far from ours.

I think that most girls who went to an all-girls school can agree that the bond they created with their class is strong. It’s an experience not many people experience especially in recent years, it’s not something many people understand. We all hate it but at the same time, it was 4 years of our lives that shaped us into who we are.

I am a junior nursing major at Adelphi University. I am from Brooklyn, NY. I love food, art, Christmas, and Drake. During the summer I love going to art galleries and out to eat with friends. And during the winter In usually at home doing homework in fuzzy pants, drinking wine and eating oreos while watching a long list of dating shows. After college, I want to become an Aesthetic Nurse Practioner and travel the world.
