It’s no secret that a significant portion of the Agnes Scott community also identifies as members of the LGBTQIA community. Those members are supported by the Safe Zone, under The Gay Johnson McDougall Center for Global Diversity and Inclusion, and should come check out the relaunched Lavender Hour! Lavender Hour is a chance for LGBT students, faculty, and staff to come together in dialogue. The relaunch of Lavender Hour is thanks to the efforts of Madelyn Kent ’18, Safe Zone LGBTQ+ Fellow.

I was able to attend the first Lavender Hour of the year, on October 18. The meeting was a gay time (pun intended) with cookies, sweet tea, and apple cider. After chatting about the LGBT library books Madelyn had brought to sit artfully on the table, she launched us into the theme of the day: community. We talked then for a while about what community means to us, and the importance of creating positive queer community, which is the ultimate goal of Lavender Hour. I normally only talk about LGBT issues with other students, so I loved being able to talk with staff and faculty about their experiences. We ended by suggesting a few other themes for following Lavender Hours, including family, being out after Agnes, intersectionality, studying abroad, and more!

If this all sounds up your alley, look out for coming Irvine announcements from the Safe Zone! The next Lavender hour is on Thursday, October 25. I hope to see you there!
