When it comes to talking about topics such as the Charlottesville riots, very strong emotions can be brought up for some. During this year’s Miss America pageant, Miss Texas, Margana Wood, was asked about this particular riot by pageant judge Jess Cagle. The question read, “Last month, a demonstration of neo-Nazis, white supremacists, and the KKK in Charlottesville turned violent and a counter protester was killed. The president said there was shared blamed with ‘very fine people on both sides.’ Were there? Tell me yes or no and explain.” Without even missing a beat Miss Texas gave her response: “I think that the white supremacist issue was very obvious,” Wood said, without even pausing before responding, “that it was a terrorist attack, and I think that President Donald Trump should have made a statement earlier, addressing the fact and in making sure all Americans feel safe in this country. That is the Number One issue right now.”
It didn’t take long for the video of her Q&A to show up all over Twitter, showing praise for her response. I honestly have no clue what on Earth goes on during a beauty pageant. Sure, I’ve seen my fair share of Toddlers and Tiaras on TLC, but I think it’s safe to assume that it’s nowhere near as serious as the real Miss America pageant. At first I just continued to scroll through my Twitter without thinking anything of seeing the pageant on my feed. Eventually as I kept scrolling, I continued to see the interview section answer over and over again, so I decided to watch it. My jaw dropped when I heard her response because I couldn’t agree with her more.
Americans should be able to feel safe here in our own country, and it is a very big issue right now. As for Donald Trump waiting to make his statement, I feel that as the president he should’ve spoken out sooner about the riots. Now, I’m not going to sit here and tell you what type of opinion to have, but I personally loved the way Miss Texas answered her question. She could’ve sat there and said anything, but instead she didn’t hesitate to say how she felt about the idea, and for that I loved it because it was so unexpected.
Even though Miss Texas didn’t take home the crown, she did shut down Donald Trump in probably the most elegant way possible. Miss Texas, from myself and hundreds of Twitter users, thank you for calling out Trump and not being afraid to answer how you saw fit.
