Lawn decorations, Tuscaloosa traffic, pep rallies and parades—homecoming was in the air. For most people west of the Mississippi, this weekend’s game was the only thing standing between the playoffs, but for others it was the homecoming game.
The Mississippi State Bulldogs arrived in Tuscaloosa, Ala., undefeated with high hopes of staying that way. Coach Saban and the Crimson Tide proved only one team should be undefeated by the end of the game.
#1 Alabama scored touchdowns on their first three possessions, leading Mississippi State 21-0 after the first drive of the second quarter.
Alabama quarterback and top player in the run for the Heisman Trophy, AJ McCarron was 16-of-23 passing for 208 yards and two touchdowns.
After the half the Bulldogs had a 97-yard drive on 16 plays to the Tide’s 1-yard line hoping to score, however Mississippi State quarterback Tyler Russell threw an interception in the end zone received by Alabama’s Robert Lester.
Plays later, Saban decided to give another quarterback a shot, putting Alabama backup sophomore Phillip Ely, where he tossed the ball to Eddie Lacy for a 27-yard touchdown pass putting Alabama up 31-0.
For the Tide, homecoming was a success rolling over the Bulldogs 38-7.
The Alabama Crimson Tide will go on to face the longtime rivalry LSU Tigers in Death Valley Saturday, Nov. 3 in Baton Rouge Louisiana, at 7 p.m. CT on CBS.
