April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and UA’s Women Gender Resource Center (WGRC) is here to help.
The WGRC is a campus resource center providing counseling and advocacy services to all students impacted by violence and abuse. Here’s a timeline of events, so you can support the WGRC and sexual assault survivors during this important month.
On Tuesday, April 5, the WGRC hosted their annual “Day of Action” – a tabling event where UA students could learn more about various way to be allies to victims of sexual assault.
The UA chapter of Not On My Campus (NOMC) encouraged those who came to the event to sign a petition to stop the backlog of rape kits. After being assaulted, victims undergo a forensic exam to collect evidence. The information gathered gets sent off to test for various DNA. These kits sit forever, often never getting opened. By clicking here, you can send a letter to your legislator to end the backlog.
On April 12, WGRC will host “Take Back the Night,” an international rally and march to show support for sexual assault survivors. It will begin near Denny Chimes and feature speakers before students march on the Quad. The event will end with a candlelight vigil for those who have experienced interpersonal violence.
If you’re interested in becoming a WGRC ambassador, stop by the Student Center on April 13.
On April 21 at Shelby Quad, there will be an Athlete A outdoor viewing party. Athlete A is a documentary discussing the sexual abuse of the US women’s gymnastics team by team trainer Larry Nasser. Seating and snacks will be provided.
Finally, on every Tuesday in April, wear Teal to show your support for survivors.
