I’ve had Spotify downloaded on my phone since 2016, accumulating albums, liked songs, playlists, and podcasts for seven years.  Over those seven years, my music taste has shifted a lot (13-year-old Megan would be very confused that 21-year-old Megan does not put EDM music on at any chance she gets). A few things have stayed the same though; there are five albums that I’ve discovered over the years that I think have no skips.

5. Stick Season by Noah Kahan

Coming in strong at #5 is Noah Kahan’s newest album “Stick Season.” This album gave me everything I needed to hear: indie, folk, and a little bit of alternative pop. It’s nostalgic, moving, and uplifting; Noah Kahan is one of the best songwriters out there, in my opinion. This album is best listened to on a long drive after dropping off a loved one at the airport, or even on a rainy day while baking cookies and reminiscing.

4. Ctrl by SZA

To be honest, I didn’t start really listening to SZA until a few years ago, but this album is IT. The lyrics are relatable, the collaborations are out of this world, and SZA’s voice is angelic. Simply put, this album is the perfect mix of soul, R&B, and rap. If you haven’t listened to this album yet, you’d better get started!

3. Wasteland, Baby! by Hozier

Not that anyone asked, but I think Hozier is one of the most naturally gifted musicians alive. I’ve listened to his music for years, and if you dig deeper into his albums, there are some unique and amazing songs. Overall, my favorite album of his is “Wasteland, Baby!” but his upcoming album has me on the edge of my seat. Give this album a listen to prepare for the religious experience that is about to be “Unreal Unearth.”

2. GINGER by BROCKHAMPTON

I started listening to BROCKHAMPTON in September of 2019, and by the time Spotify wrapped dropped, they were my number three artist of the year. It is all because of this album; “GINGER” is one of the most cohesive albums I’ve ever listened to. I can play it from start to finish and experience the story, or I can shuffle it and grind out some homework. If you’re interested in listening to alternative rap, I highly recommend this album.

1. American Teen by Khalid[TL1]  Over the years, this album has stayed with me. Nobody has put out an album as memorable, moving, and fun as “American Teen” since its release. Every song on this album tells its own story, but the collective album tells a bigger story. It’s perfect to listen to during all times of the year and has songs suitable for every mood… making “American Teen” my favorite album of all time.

Those are the albums, but EPs deserve some love, too. Here are two EPs that I think deserve a spot in my favorite albums recap:

Lately by Still Woozy

I fell in love with Still Woozy’s music in high school and I haven’t stopped listening since. He dropped this EP a few years back and it was basically his first album. It has some great collaborations and chill summer songs that have a permanent spot on my beach playlist.

Groovy People by Marc E. Bassy

I’ve been listening to songs from “Groovy People” since I was fifteen – and they’ve never gotten old. This little album is perfect to listen to in the sunshine at the beach or when you need a little pick-me-up.
