Nicki Minaj’s The Pinkprint Song by Song Review

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Albany chapter.

Who doesn’t like Nicki Minaj? If you don’t then you’re not paying attention to her talent, you’re just focusing on her appearance. After this review however, I hope to change your perception of Nicki. Her latest album, The Pinkprint, came out on December 12, 2014 and since then I haven’t been able to put it down. Here is a song by song review of the album, as well as my favorite line from each song.

“All Things Go”

The album starts off with this sad song, something that is not the norm for Nicki Minaj. I wasn’t surprised by the emotion that she put into this song, but something about the way she was signing struck me. In this song she talks about getting proposed to, having an abortion, and the death of one of her little cousins.

Favorite Line: “And I know Jelani will always love me, and I’ll always love him. And I’m just his little sister not Nicki Minaj when I’m around him.”

“I Lied”

Nicki Minaj sings? Yes, she does and she sounds really good. This song showed both her singing and rapping talents. This is another heartfelt song about her trying not to fall in love.

Favorite Line: “I lied to keep you from breaking my heart.”

“The Crying Game”

This is a powerful song featuring Jessie Ware from the UK. This song about an abusive relationship is one of my favorites on the album.

Favorite Line: “Saying that we had enough, but enough of what? Another slap to the face, another uppercut.

“Get On Your Knees”

This is the Nicki Minaj that I’m used to. Ariana Grande is featured on this song. Her powerful voice along with Nicki’s lyrical genius makes for a good tune.

Favorite Line: “Let me see what you’re workin’ with, if I’m ridin’, I’m murkin’ it. Slow grindin’, I’m twerkin’ it, yeah, I bagged him, I Birkin’d it.”

“Feeling Myself”

What makes this song greater than it already is? Beyoncé. Queen Bey and Nicki came together and made this every girl’s anthem. What girl isn’t playing this while they’re getting ready to go out?

Favorite Line: “I am a Rap legend. Just go ask the Kings of Rap, who is the Queen and things of that nature!”

“Only”

This song features the “Kings of Young Money”: Drake and Lil Wayne. Chris Brown is also featured on this track. I’m not sure if this song was a diss towards Nicki’s ex Safaree, but the shots that were fired were brazen.

Favorite Line: “If you mouth off I blow your face off, I mean pop-pop-pop then I take off.”

“Want Some More”

If you didn’t think that Nicki Minaj was talented, this song will prove you wrong. The beat is sick, the lyrics are brilliant, and she reminded me of Twista when she spit her lyrics so fast.

Favorite Line: “Want it, I get it, I don’t be wanting for nothing. I mean, I do what I do and it must be counting for something. I don’t be jumping from topic to topic, stay in my pocket, I got your rent in my pocket, so can I pay you to pop it?”

“Four Door Aventador”

I may be a bad fan for saying this, but this song had a Lil’ Kim feel to it. Early 90’s hip hop.

Favorite Line: “Meet me at the Rucker, take the Bruckner.”

“Favorite”

This song is basically about Nicki’s longing to take the top place in a relationship. This song features Jeremih.

Favorite Line: “Cause it’s you I would change for, you always make sure.”

“Buy A Heart”

I don’t really like this song, but since her and Meek Mill have a cute relationship, I tolerate it.

Favorite Line: “He could tell that I was wifey material, he was liking my style in my videos. I wasn’t looking for love I was looking for buzz, so at times I would lie and say I’m busy, yo.”

“Trini Dem Girls”

I LOVE this ode to the island girls. It reminds me of Beyoncé’s “Who Run The World”. This song not only represents the Caribbean girls, but girls of every background.

Favorite Line: “American girls run the planet, South African, European, Asian, Australian, and my Canadian girls.”

“Anaconda”

One of the most popular songs on this album. I love this song because it makes me want to dance, but then again every song does.

Favorite Line: “Say he don’t like em boney, he want something he can grab, so I pulled up in the Jag and I hit him with the jab like.”

“The Night Is Still Young”

This would be the perfect graduation song. It’s all about being young and living your dreams.

Favorite Line: “How dare we sit quietly and watch the world pass us by.”

“Pills and Potions”

This song just spells out heartbreak. Nicki is still in love with this person and she can’t get over them.

Favorite Line: “So I pop pills for ‘em, cop cribs in the hills on ‘em.”

“Bed of Lies”

The ultimate break up song. This is another somber one on the track.

Favorite Line: “They say you don’t know what you got ’til it’s gone. They say that your darkest hour come before your dawn.”

“Grand Piano”

In this heart wrenching song Nicki brings out her beautiful voice. It’s a beautiful ballad.

Favorite Line: “The people are talking, the people are saying that you have been playing my heart like a grand piano. So play on…”
