Friends, our prayers have been answered. Queen Nicki Minaj is in fact, coming back to TV. (*choirs rejoice in the background*)
She broke the news last week that not only is ABC Family giving her a television show, but that she will also executive produce and star in the project. The show will be a comedy, all about her life growing up in Queens, NY. Kate Angelo, from The Back Up Plan, is set to write the series.
“This is one of the more unique adventures I’ve ever embarked on,” said Minaj to Variety. “I couldn’t be more proud and excited to team up with an amazing group of people to give the world something really special.”
Basically, this show is going to be like the female Everyone Hates Chris, which was also an iconic show in black television. Nicki is keeping fans on the edge of their seats with more details about the show, ever since she dropped the news on Twitter. Since it isn’t coming out for a while, here are five things we hope to see happen on the show.
1. Crazy first- generation antics.
Nicki’s family came here from Trinidad, so it’s only right to assume that the show will be filled with some of her family’s culture and traditions. It’ll be interesting to see how young Nicki works to balance her family life with her life in Queens, but we can only assume that it will be AWESOME.
2. Unknown relationships.
Everyone knows about Nicki’s current relationship with Meek Mill, and her more alleged relationships (*cough cough* DRAKE), so it will be nice to see who young Nicki was crushing on in the schoolyard. Â
Â
3. Sass, sass, SASS.
Nicki is known for never holding her tongue, and saying the things that need to be said (#MILEYWHATSGOOD), so it’s only right that the show will include some of her most earliest iconic moments, not taking any mess from anyone.
4. Style.
Whether we’re talking about pink wig era or VMAs 2015 era, Nicki’s style has always been legendary, and we have to assume that young Nicki will be the exact same.
5. Confidence. Â
More than anything, Nicki is known for exuding tons of confidence and urging her fans to do the same. Here’s hoping that young Nicki, while struggling through the trials and tribulations of adolescence, has a sage older mentor who teaches her how to be strong, proud, and fierce AF.
This show is a big moment for television. Shows like Blackish and Empire are trailblazing in ratings, setting records that no other shows with all African- American casts have done before. One can only hope that Nicki’s show will also set records, and be the show that everyone can’t stop talking about for a long time. But sigh, we must wait for a while before it gets to our actual TV screens. Until then…
