#62MillionGirls: The Let Girls Learn Initiative

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at American chapter.

Sixty-two million girls. That is the astounding world wide number of girls who are not receiving an education right now in 2015.

Using her powerful platform as First Lady, Michelle Obama and the White House have launched the “Let Girls Learn” initiative in order to spread awareness regarding the lack of education for girls. Last week, Obama spoke on “The Power of the Educated Girl” panel, hosted by Glamour magazine in NYC, addressing the issues of education and speaking to 1,000 schoolgirls as well as girls everywhere telling them “There is no boy at this age that is cute enough or interesting enough to stop you from getting your education.”  Powerful women like Kerry Washington and Charlize Theron have taken to Instagram to express their support of the campaign, posting school photos citing something that their education was able to give them.

In today’s day and age, educating women throughout the world is a global responsibility. These young girls hold the key to the future, within them could be the answers and solutions for a better tomorrow, they only need the chance. Education is no longer a privilege and should no longer be divided on gender lines. It is a right, a right that every girl, no matter where she lives or where comes from, is entitled to. It is crucial that #62milliongirls, and many more to follow, learn.
