The Best of the 85th Academy Awards

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at American chapter.

The Oscars is the most anticipated night in Hollywood. The red carpet is rolled out and the stars gather under one roof in hopes of being declared the best of the best. This year’s Academy Awards was no different. Here is a list of the “Best of” the night had to offer.
(Here’s a list of the 2013 Academy Award winners in case you missed it)

Best Dressed
This year’s best dressed celebrities included: Kerry Washington, Amanda Seyfried and Amy Adams.

Kerry Washington looked stunning in her understated coral Miu Miu gown.

Amanda Seyfried lit up the carpet in Alexander McQueen’s lace.

Amy Adams looked beautiful in Oscar de la Renta’s Cinderella-esque gown.

Best Performances
The theme of this year’s Oscars was “Music in the Movies.” The show included a number of original musical and dance performaces as well as performances from major musical movies.

Jennifer Hudson huffed and puffed and blew the house down with her reprisal of “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” from her Oscar winning role as Effie White in Dream Girls.

Though it’s been 13 years since Chicago won the award for best picture, Catherine Zeta Jones still knows a thing or two about jazz. Zeta Jones, who won the award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her performace as Velma Kelly, sang and danced to “All That Jazz.”

The cast of Les Miserables also gave a memorable performance of a medley of songs from the film.

With Anne Hathaway now joining the ranks of Zeta Jones and Hudson as Best Supporting Actress, it seems the Academy is always impressed by a women with a big heart and a good song.

Other memorable performances include the waltz between Channing Tatum and Charlize Theron and Adele’s performance of “Skyfall.”

Best Speeches
The most notable speeches of the night came from two of the biggest winners: Daniel Day Lewis (won Best Actor for Lincoln) and Ben Affleck (won Best Picture for Argo).

Known for his dramatic roles, Daniel Day Lewis gave a humorous speech as he teased presenter and pal, Meryl Streep. Day Lewis joked about being originally cast in Streep’s role in The Iron Lady before agreeing to switch with her for the title role in Lincoln.

Though the Argo director was snubbed for Best Director, his film went on to tak the Best Picture Award. Affleck, who won an Oscar almost 15 years ago for his work on the screenplay for Good Will Hunting, gave an emotional speech. He thanked all those in the industry who helped him get to where he is today. In an emotional moment, Affleck said “It doesn’t matter how you get knocked down in life. That’s going to happen. All that matters is you’ve got to get up.”

Best Surprises
Argo made history by becoming one of four films to win Best Picture without the Best Director nomination, the last being Driving Miss Daisy. Though it has won several other awards this season, many were surprised to see the film take the Best Picture award.

Jack Nicholson gave everyone a surprise when he took the stage to present the award for Best Picture, but instead of Nicholson presenting the award, Michelle Obama was the one who got to open the envelope. Streaming into the show from the White House, Mrs. Obama said how proud she was of all the nominated films before announcing that Argo was the winner.

One of the biggest surprises of the night was the host, Seth Macfarlane. The elusive Family Guy creator stepped out from behind the curtain and strutted across the Oscar stage. Exuding charm, wit and humour, Macfarlane’s musical numbers seem to suggest that he is a man of many talents. Though many stars walked across that stage, it seems that a new one may have been born under its spotlight.
