Drawing is a great way to pass the time. It can even lead to careers and endless opportunities. But what happens when you’re bored with your art style? What happens when taking a break isn’t helping with your boredom? What happens when you want to expand your art?
Simple: you participate in a drawing challenge.
But what drawing challenges are there? Below is a condensed list of some of them.
the evil eye art style challenge
Also known as an art style bend, the evil art style challenge involves artists taking characteristics of their art style and drawing the opposite of them. For example, an artist with a round art style, thick outlines and warm colors would instead make their art style angular, use thin outlines and have duller, cooler colors.
Inktober Alternatives
Inktober is an annual drawing challenge taking place in October. Each day of the month has a different prompt, varying from year to year. However, the creator of Inktober, Jake Parker, was accused of plagiarizing fellow artist Alphonso Dunn back in 2020. This has led to the creation of several Inktober alternatives, often with their own monthly theme and individual, daily prompts.
Here’s a list of some Inktober alternatives:
- OCtober focuses on artists’ original characters, also known as OCs.
- Witchtober does the same but with a focus on witches instead.
- Huevember, while taking place in November instead of October, the same premise applies but with colors.
Draw This in Your Style
Also known as DTIYS, this challenge involves artists either redrawing a pre-existing image such as a screenshot, or artists redrawing another artist’s original artwork. DTIYS can and has been used for fanart, fun or a competition.
Redrawing Old Art
A classic challenge. Redrawing previous works of art serves as not just a way to improve your art, but also a way to see how your art has already improved over time.
Color Palette Challenge
It is similar to Huevember in the sense that the colors used for a drawing are limited to a specific color palette. However, this challenge can be done any day and any time of the year. There are hundreds upon thousands of color palettes to choose from, on top of those one can create for oneself.
The 100 Themes Challenge
Mostly known among those on DeviantArt, the 100 Themes Challenge is exactly what it sounds like: there are 100 prompts needed to be drawn. However, there is no set time limit for this challenge, meaning that artists can take as long as they want to finish all 100 themes. There are at least five variations of the prompt lists posted. Possibilities are endless here.
