The Day Beyonce Turned Black

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at American chapter.

Beyoncé shook up the world once again after dropping an awesome music video for her single, “Formation” on the night before the Super Bowl.

“Formation” is Beyoncé’s first new single since 2014, and she killed it!

I feel that black people in the United States are constantly being ignored and that our voices are not being heard. And yes, the Black Lives Matter movement is certainly turning some heads and making people pay attention to what is really going on in America today. Black people are constantly being murdered by police officers for no good reason but hardly anyone seems to be boycotting anything. Then, this new song comes out and throws the whole world into a frenzy.

There have been an incredible amount of positive and negative reactions to the music video. Seen as a black empowerment song to many, but as anti-law enforcement to others. The image of the sinking police car and the line of police men holding up their hands seemed anti law enforcement to some police officers and their supporters. And Bey’s performance at the Super Bowl certainly did not help. Some police officers feel that the costumes Bey and the dancers were performing in represented the Black Panthers, who practiced militant self-defense of minority communities against the United States government.

So, the police have decided to boycott Beyoncé (They must really feel threatened by a song). Yes, boycott. That means that where Beyoncé goes, the police will not follow. Meaning, there will be no proper security at Bey’s concerts. However, in a shocking twist of events Minister Louis Farrakhan says that the Nation of Islam has her back.

Some think Saturday Night Live’s sketch “The Day Beyoncé Turned Black” is totally unrealistic but is it?

People seem to ignore the fact that famous black celebrities are BLACK. It’s as if some people are living this all-white bubble version of the world. Newsflash, there are other races.

Also, a lot of people think that things that black people made cool aren’t cool except when someone who isn’t black does it (*cough cough* cultural appropriation). It’s a slap in the face. And a perfect example of this is Kylie Jenner. BUT that’s a story for another day…
