Even if you’re not a fan of the CW’s Jane the Virgin (which you should be because it is amazing), you have got to give props to the series’ leading actress, Gina Rodriguez, on her first Golden Globe award for Best Actress in a TV Comedy. Rodriguez was not only the first recipient from the CW of the award, but also the first from the network to be nominated.
In her heartfelt acceptance speech, which you can watch below, Rodriguez included everyone from the cast and producers of her hit show to her parents, whom she credited with always encouraging her to, “dream big and never stop dreaming.” Rodriguez, who has held an active voice in the Latin community, also made sure to give special recognition to her fellow Latinos. “This award is so much more than myself, it represents a culture that wants to see themselves as heroes,” she added with a smile.
In a 2014 interview with Modern Luxury Magazine, Rodriguez addressed her role in inspiring fellow latino actors and actresses. “I want to play roles that I see in my reality. My sister is a successful investment banker; my other sister is a doctor. I want to see those roles. I want to see Latinas play roles that are empowering, that are strong, that break the norm!” Rodriguez went on to address her new found fame, stating that she would rather be remembered for changing social norms in the entertainment industry than in episodes of her tv show.
With a fresh lineup of episodes starting in January, viewers can look forward too seeing more of Gina Rodriguez on their screens. Jane the Virgin airs Mondays at 9:00PM EST. on the CW.
