Glamour Women of the Year Highlights

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at American chapter.

Glamour proved you don’t need a special occassion to celebrate women when on November 11 they hosted their annual Women of the Year Awards. With a wide range of honorees including Lady Gaga and Kerry Washington, the night paid homage to some serious girl power…or rather women power! The event aimed to feature an eclectic mix of women, some of whom you wouldn’t always find on magazine covers and billboards. Check out the full list of honorees.

Here some highlights from the evening’s award recipients:

Catherine Martin

Trendsetter, costume designer, Academy Award winner…this gal has a plethora of accomplishments on her resume. Her latest collaboration with her husband in this summer’s box office hit The Great Gatsby showed the world that the 1920 flapper look could still influence today’s fashion world. With other costume design credits including Moulin Rouge! and Australia Martin’s design aesthetic doesn’t seem to be limited to one look or century for that matter!

Malala Yousafzai

It’s not everyday that a 10-year-old girl decides to speak out against an entire political movement, but that’s exactly what Malala Yousafzai found herself doing when the Taliban began banning girls’ education. Although many criticized her for speaking out, Malala started giving speeches across Pakistan in favor of education, winning the country’s National Peace Prize. Her efforts received global attention on October 8, 2012 when Malala was shot in the head on a bus ride home from school. Since her attack, Malala has showed no signs of giving up her quest for advocating education for girls. She has written her memoir I Am Malala and is one of the youngestever nominees of the Nobel Peace Prize. Now Malala can add 2013 Glamour Woman of the Year to her list of things she’s accomplished before the age of eighteen.

Kaitlin Roig-DeBellis

Kaitlin Roig-DeBellis’ compassion for her students was pushed to the brink on December 14, 2012 when a gunman entered the Newtown, Connecticut school killing twenty first-graders and six teachers. Attempting to remain calm, Roig-DeBellis ushered her fifteen students into the bathroom. Unbeknownst to her, Roig-DeBellis’ quick thinking would make her a hero. There is no dispute that her actions helped save the lives of her students, but Roig-DeBellis isn’t done giving. In January of 2012 she launched Classes 4 Classes, a nonprofit that lets elementary school classes sponsor educational gifts for other classrooms. Roig-DeBellis shows how much it can mean when teachers go above and beyond the call of duty.
