As many of you probably know, you aren’t supposed to wash your hair everyday and you’re most likely wondering why. While there are various reasons on why you shouldn’t wash it every day, washing your hair every day will strip and deteriorate hair color, and can also be damaging long term.

Below are five essential tips on surviving second (or third) day hair!

1. Rinse your hair with only water on non-wash days

If you go to the gym, and find it hard to not wash your hair after your workout, try just rinsing your hair with water. By doing this, you are still getting the sweat out but not stripping your hair.

2. Hats, hats, hats

A great go to is a hat — any hat will work, whether it be a baseball cap, fedora or even a bowler hat. The hat will help to hit any greasy roots, helping you last another day without washing your hair!

3. Dry shampoo is your best friend

If hats aren’t your thing then try using dry shampoo! Dry shampoo helps to absorb all the oil, and adds texture to create fuller looking hair. Dry Bar makes a fabulous dry shampoo, but drugstores also offer many affordable alternatives. Plus, most come in a travel size so you can easily throw them in your bag. Fun fact: baby powder can work just as well!

4. Use a boar bristle brush — especially on the roots

This brush cleans out the oils and distributes it more evenly so it doesn’t gather at the scalp. It is best to brush out second day hair with this brush twice a day. Tip: go through your hair with a regular brush first then follow up with this boar bristle one.

5. Find hairstyles that complement second day hair

Hairstyles like braids, buns, or even curls work best with second day hair! Many people even say that their hair holds better with second day hair because it tends to have more texture than freshly-washed hair.

Braids and buns just work better with the texture in hair and can give you that more “messy” look that many strive for.
