Do you feel as though you’re meant to be where the spotlight shines? Or maybe you just have that little extra touch of star quality? Whatever the case, Halloween is just around the corner and if you’re still stressing about what to wear, why not take a couple of ques from some of Broadway’s most audacious leading ladies. Here are a couple costume ideas taken directly from the Great White Way, but can easily be recreated from your closet or a local vintage shop.
1. The Leading Player from Pippin is confident and a little mysterious. As the ringleader of a circus troupe she’s got killer dance moves and may or may not know how to work a trapeze. Plus, who doesn’t look fierce in all black? (Top hat optional)
2. Reno Sweeney from Anything Goes is one fabulous leading lady. This costume is perfect for anyone looking to rock the nautical look (which is always in right?). All you need are some sailor stripes and a “come hither wink” to pull off this look. Usually she sings and then tap dances… and then does both at the same time. But it’s Halloween so really anything goes!
3. One of the easiest pieces to put together is inspired by this little blast from the past number. Sheila’s costume from the musical Hair is the epitomy of casual with her peasant top, and bell-bottom jeans. So let you’re hair down and wave a peace sign for this hippie-inspired look.
4. Jazz hands, scandal, and murder – oh my! Chicago may follow the crime-ridden lives of a couple of pretty gutsy women, but it only takes some black lace and red lipstick to recreate this saucy look.
5. This last character may be known for her amazing singing voice, and her secret yet somewhat eerie relationship with a phantom. However, being able to hit a high C is not a requirement for this look. With white as her prominent color, all you need is an air of innocence and the occasional look of longing to pull off Christine Daae from Phantom of the Opera.
You don’t have to be a professional Broadway star to let your inner diva shine on Halloween. In fact you don’t even need a spotlight or piano accompaniment. So try taking inspiration from one of these beloved Broadway characters and you’re bound to get rave reviews!
