Movies to See Over Winter Break

Winter Break is almost upon us, which means you’ll get a much needed break from school work. Now that you’ll have more free time, what are you going to do? Well there are many great movies coming out during December that warrant a trip to the movie theater with your friends. So make sure to catch these movies while you’re home.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

The second installment of The Hobbit trilogy, directed by Peter Jackson, comes to theaters on December 13. In this movie, Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf the Gray and the dwarves continue their quest to reclaim their homeland. This film stars Ian McKellan, Martin Freeman, Benedict Cumberbatch, Evangeline Lilly and Cate Blanchett among others. Plus, Orlando Bloom returns in this movie as Legolas.

American Hustle

This movie starring Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Amy Adams and Christian Bale comes out in theaters on December 13. Director David O. Russell, who worked with Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper in Silver Linings Playbook directs this movie. In this movie, a con man, played by Bale and his British partner (Adams) are forced to work with an FBI agent played by Cooper. Through their work with the FBI agent, Bale and Adams are thrust into a world full of mafia and powerbrokers.

Saving Mr. Banks

Tom Hanks plays Walt Disney in this film about how the film version of Mary Poppins came to be, which is set to come out on December 13. Disney promised his daughters he would make a movie of their favorite book, Mary Poppins. In his 20-year quest to obtain the rights, Disney conflicts with the author who will not let her beloved character become part of Hollywood. Ultimately, the two work together to make Mary Poppins one of the most beloved films.

Anchor Man 2: The Legend Continues

Our favorite San Diego news team is back in theaters on December 18. Will Ferrell, Christina Applegate, Steve Carrell, Paul Rudd and David Koechner all returned for this highly anticipated sequel. Ron Burgundy, Veronica Corningstone, Brick Tamland, Brian Fantana and Champ Kind join forces once again while taking the first 24-hour news channel by storm. Stay classy and see this movie.

The Wolf of Wall Street

This film is based on a true story. It is directed by Martin Scorcese and arrives in theaters on December 25. In it, Leonardo DiCaprio plays Jordan Belfort, a New York stockbroker. The film chronicles his rise to wealth and follows his fall involving crime, corruption and the federal government. The movie also stars Matthew McConaughey and Jonah Hill among others.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

Ben Stiller directs and stars in this big screen adaptation of James Thurber’s short story of the same name. In the film, day dreamer Walter Mitty escapes his boring life by creating worlds filled with heroism, romance and action where he is the hero. When his real life job, and his coworker’s job is threatened, Stiller embarks on a journey more extraordinary than any of his imaginings. This film also stars Kristen Wiig, Adam Scott and Sean Penn.
