The Struggles of Being Lactose Intolerant

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at American chapter.
  1. Feeling sick to your stomach after eating anything dairy.

  2. All the best foods are contain lactose… mac and cheese, grilled cheese, ice cream, pizza, yogurt, ICE CREAM, mozzarella sticks, milkshakes, literally cheese anything…the list goes on (unless vegan alternatives are used).

  3. Having to find alternatives for milk which are sometimes inconvenient or aren’t always as easy to come by– almond milk, soy milk, coconut milk. And let’s be real Lactaid is kind of gross.

  4. Going to a friend’s house for dinner and feeling bad about not being able to eat what was made…or sucking it up, eating and later feeling awful about your decision.

  5. Having to opt for the fruit sorbet instead of soft serve on a hot summer day.

  6. Post-break up Ben & Jerry’s is not an option, sadly.

  7. Is it just me or does every college student meeting or event serve pizza?!

  8. Forgetting (or ignoring) you’re lactose intolerant and accidently filling your plate with all dairy foods. Dairy binge. Oops.

  9. The fact that you can develop lactose intolerance suddenly. After eating dairy for 17 years of my life I got the terrible news…

  10. Coming off as extremely picky or “dieting” to people who don’t know you’re lactose intolerant.

I’m going to be honest, I usually don’t let lactose intolerance restrict me too much. I just can’t help it. A girl’s gotta have her ice cream! Being a food lover and having any dietary restrictions such as lactose intolerance, gluten allergy or others is always a struggle. But chin up – we’ll get through it together!
