Top 3 Movie Scores and Songs to Study To

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at American chapter.

During Oscar season, a lot of emphasis is put on acting, directing and writing, but what about the music? Some of indie music’s biggest names have contributed their talents to several of this year’s best films, and could have a chance to pick up an Oscar for their work. Need the perfect accompaniment to a low-key study session? Look no further than these scores and songs that are some of the year’s best efforts in music made for movies.

1. Her score by Will Butler and Owen Pallett

Will Butler of Arcade Fire collaborated with Owen Pallett to create this dreamy futuristic score for Spike Jonze’s film Her. “Supersymmetry”, one of the tracks from the band’s latest album Reflektor, works its way into the score and perfectly fits into the feel of the film. Scores are often overlooked and underappreciated, but this one is not to be missed. Its simple and elegant sound is guaranteed to put listeners in a dreamy state that they won’t want to escape.

Standout tracks: “Photograph”, “Song on the Beach”, “Divorce Papers”

2. “The Moon Song” from Her by Spike Jonze and Karen O

Sung by Karen O. of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, this is perhaps the simplest of all the Best Original Song nominees in the best way possible. It captures the spirit of Her perfectly and allows listeners to exist inside the utopian world so beautifully created by writer/director Spike Jonze, even if only for two and a half minutes.

3. All is Lost score by Alex Ebert

Ebert, best known as the lead singer of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, has already taken home a Golden Globe for his work on All is Lost. A movie with no dialogue relies on the perfect music to accompany the story, and Ebert excels at providing just that.

Standout tracks: “Excelsior”, “Dance of Lillies”
