The government shut down has closed many things in the District from the National Mall to the National Zoo including the beloved, Panda-Cam. Chances are you and your friends may be looking for things to do! Here are some ways to spend your time while we wait around for Congress to get their act together.Â
1. Although the Smithsonian museums are closed, go visit the Newseum or International Spy Museum. Both are still open during the shutdown. Walk around the Pulitzer prize photographs or check the daily news headlines at the Newsuem. At the International Spy Museum you can visit the Argo or Bond Villains exhibits.
2. If you don’t want to visit the Newseum or International Spy Museum you can always visit Madame Tussaud’s. Meet all 44 Presidents and take pictures with your favorite celebrities. Gather your friends together and see how many celebrities you can meet in a day.
3. Go to Kramer Books and Afterwords CafĂ©. Whether you want to find books, or get coffee or a meal, this DC staple won’t let you down both during the government shut down. It may even be your new favorite hangout after!Â
4. Visit Eastern Market on the weekends and browse the offerings from local artists. You never know what you’re going to find!
5. Visit over 170 foreign embassies at Embassy Row! It’s like a free trip around the world!
6. Â If you feel like staying on campus, gather your friends and a ton of baking supplies and have a bake-a-thon. Fall is the perfect season for baking. Think of all the pumpkin and apple flavored cupcakes, cookies, and cakes you can make. Have a movie marathon after and enjoy all the goodies you just made.
Have fun collegiettes!
