This year’s World Series is a battle of the Midwest cities, with the Cleveland Indians facing off against the Chicago Cubs. Not only is it a Midwest battle, but a battle to win a world series after a long time without winning a title for either team. However, all eyes have been on the Chicago Cubs to win the series. Why you may ask? Here are some reasons why they should clench the title of the best team in major league baseball:
1. They haven’t made it to the World Series since 1945
The Cubs have not made played in the World Series for 71 years. Teams always have their slumping periods, but 71 years is quite a lot. After the game on October 22, when the Cubs clenched the national league title, generations of fans celebrated their victory.
2. They have a huge celebrity following
From Eddie Veder of Pearl Jam to Jimmy Kimmel and his sidekick Guillermo, the Cubs have caught the eyes of many celebrities. They have been interviewed for Kimmel’s television show and are loved by the comedian Bill Murray. Murray has been at many playoffs and World Series games this season and even contemplated skipping the ceremony for an award he was given by President Obama to watch the Cubs win the National League title. Guess an award from the President (who is a fan of Chicago’s other baseball team, the White Sox) beats the Cubs.
3. They haven’t won the World Series for over 100 years
The Cubs have also had quite a long slump period since winning the World Series, since 1908 to be exact. Since then, the team has been rumored to be cursed by a goat. Hopefully this year, the goat will not stop the 2016 team from only a couple more games for the championship. So let’s Fly the Win (also the W)!
As the series continues this week with Game 7 tonight at 8pm, the Cubs are tied with the Indians. If Chicago fans continue to be dedicated and the players play harder, then no goat can stop them from winning. If they win the World Series, then they would make headlines as winners for the first time in over a century. In the name of Cubs fans everywhere, GO CUBS GO!
