Oprah Winfrey, Jennifer Lawrence, Beyonce Knowles, Angelina Jolie—many of us picture one of these lovely ladies when we imagine an inspiration to women everywhere. While these women should motivate you to chase your dreams and conquer the world, I am here to tell you about five other damsels who could inspire you to do the same.
Lyndsey Scott If you’re familiar with the Victoria Secret angels you may recognize Lyndsey’s face. However, did you know that she not only attended Amherst College but graduated with a Computer Science degree?! She dabbled with double majoring in Theatre and Economics before Computer Science won her heart. While she went straight into acting after graduating, she continues to code and makes apps published on the Apple store. Her most recent app? Iport, a portfolio app for models to bring to their go-sees!
Robyn Lawley This Australian born beauty was the second plus-size model to cover Elle France, the first plus-size model to be shot for Australian Vogue and the first Australian plus size model to be on the cover of Madison, an Australian fashion magazine. She started off doing straight modeling, but after finding the size requirement too difficult to maintain, she decided to become a plus size model. I’m sure she doesn’t regret her decision. Not only is she a successful model but she also has a food blog, cookbook, photographs and has written articles for the Daily Beast on body image.
Jenna Marbles If you frequent YouTube’s Most Popular video list, you’ve most likely seen Jenna’s face pop up on your screen. With a great blend of charm, wit and silliness, Jenna is the only female YouTuber in the top twenty most subscribed Youtube channel list at number 7. While her videos like “How To Trick People That You’re Good-Looking,” may sound like a deflation to the confidence, Jenna actually makes fun of the societal pressures put on both beauty and woman. As a Boston University graduate with a masters degree in Sports Psychology and Counseling, Jenna is a prime example of how you never know what path your life may take you.
Ellen Ochoa Dr. Ochoa was the first Latina astronaut to go to space. She served on a nine-day mission aboard the shuttle Discovery in 1993. She is also an engineer and is a patent holder of at least three different inventions to date. Dr Ochoa also obtained both her masters of science and doctorate from Stanford University. Dr. Ochoa is proof that if you work hard and you believe you can do something, then nothing can stand in your way! One small step for her, one big steps for Latinas (and women) everywhere!
Michele Norris While Michele started out with a degree in electrical engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, she switched career ideas and pursued an honorary journalism from University of Minnesota. Thank goodness because she is now the first African American female host for NPR (National Public Radio). She has won an Emmy and the Journalist of the Year award from the National Association of Black Journalists.
