10 Tips to Staying Healthy While Juggling a Full Schedule

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at App State chapter.

As classes progress, we become swamped with exams, stay up too late, and often fall subject to a number of unhealthy meals.  Schoolwork tends to take over our lives, and working out is no longer a priority. But don’t worry; staying healthy can be fun when you do it with your friends! Here are some quick and easy ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle while balancing your schoolwork:

1. Take group fitness classes on campus
Avoid the bored feeling that you get from walking on the treadmill, and find some motivation as you get presented with an hour of intense workouts.  Get your friends together and pick out a class for a fun and enjoyable workout.  Click here for the fall class schedule!

2. Go for a walk on the greenway
This (rare) flat area is perfect for walking, running, and biking.  It is an easy trail and a perfect place to bring your dog!

3. Plan a hike with your friends
Enjoy the scenery as the leaves start to change by planning a hike for you and your friends!  This is one of the best times of the year in Boone; why not take in the beautiful foliage while getting in some exercise?

4. Sign up for the annual Stickboy Bread Co Mayview Madness 5k and Fun Run
Get a friend and sign up for the annual Stickboy 5k.  Create a training schedule and stick to it.  The run will be October 22 in Blowing Rock – a great roommate-bonding activity!

5. Sneak in workouts on commercial breaks

We all know that the best TV shows come on during the fall, so how are we supposed to have time to work out with all that vegging?  Look up quick and easy workouts that can be done from home! Make time for these workouts during commercial breaks; try magazine websites such as Shape and Women’s Health for good exercises.

6. EAT BREAKFAST!
The amount of stress put on the importance of eating breakfast can become redunant, but it truly is the most important meal of the day!  Breakfast starts your day off right and gets your metabolism going. Try Oatmeal! It’s a great breakfast: quick, easy, and healthy.

7. Lose the bun
An easy way to zap calories is to lose the bread!  Try a spinach wrap instead of bread or take off the top layer of your bun and enjoy your hamburger with a few less calories.

8. Increase your intake of fat-burning foods
Everyone can benefit from increasing their metabolism, you just have to eat right! Shape Magazine claims these to be the top 5 fat-burning foods:  tuna, grapefruit, rolled oats, green tea, and hot peppers. Each of these will boost your metabolism and help burn fat.

9. Get a good night’s sleep
With stress levels high, it can be hard to get the recommended eight hours a night.  Getting a good night’s rest is one of the best things for your body and is of upmost importance for maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

10. Make your coffee order “skinny”
When staying up late studying for your next exam, coffee can sometimes end up being your one saving grace.  In order to lower calories, make your order “skinny.”  Try ordering a cup of black coffee, getting the smallest size, and/or having your drink made with half the flavor and skim milk.
