5 Halloween Alternatives

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at App State chapter.

Halloween is right around the corner, and if you’re like me you’re still scrambling for plans. Maybe you’re not the partying type, or maybe your friends are going out of town. Either way, no one wants to sit around doing nothing on Halloween! Here are a few alternatives to the typical Halloween party plans.

1. Go home!
Yeah, I said it…go home! I know it may not be your first choice, but going home can be a good time around the holidays! The pumpkins will be lit on the front porches in your neighborhood, the fake spider webs will be thrown over the bushes, and a bucket of candy will be waiting in your house for trick-or-treaters.  Don’t let the idea of going home haunt you, you might enjoy it!

2. Movie Marathon, anyone?
Halloween is the prime time for movie marathons. Think of all the movies that you can choose from! You could go for the classics like The Sixth Sense or The Shining, or visit the world of witchcraft and wizardry and host a Harry Potter marathon! Put on your pajamas, grab some popcorn, a few friends, and you’re set!

3. Host a haunted dinner
What’s better than dressing up? Dressing up and eating delicious Halloween themed food!  Ask some friends to come over for a Halloween potluck in their spookiest costume! There are countless recipes out there that are specific to Halloween, so why not try some of them? You can make Nutter Butter ghosts, Witch’s Hat cookies, or Mummy cupcakes! Check out this website for some festive recipes!

4. Pumpkin Carving Competition
Halloween is pumpkin season. Big, small, round, oval… they’re all out there! Invite your friends over and get to carving. Make everyone create their own design and then vote on the best (and worst) looking pumpkin.  The seeds can be roasted for a tasty snack afterward and the least attractive pumpkin could even be used in a pie!

5. Hit up a haunted trail, house, or maze
Ghosts and Goblins and Ghouls, oh my! One of the best parts of Halloween is getting scared.  Being afraid is a heart-beating, hair-raising, adrenaline rush, and it gives you an excuse to jump into the arms of your hott Halloween date. Boone offers up a lot of fun mazes, trails, and haunted houses for your fright finding pleasure. Check out this list of what Boone has to offer over Halloween weekend!

After college, Halloween usually means work the next morning and not a chance at trick-or-treating. Take advantage of your age this year and have some festive fun!
