It’s no secret that people change when they come to college. Personally, I know that I’m a completely different person right now in my junior year than I was as a freshman. I have the same morals and general insight, but the way I handle things are WAY different. The experiences and situations I’ve had to encounter in my life have shaped who I am.

Maturity is obviously an important part of adulthood. Here are five things you start realizing when you start looking at things differently.

1)   Not every situation deserves a reaction.

Sometimes silence is the easiest way to get your point across. Not everyone needs to be replied to, or to be ‘told off.’ Let them say what they say while you just chill.

2)   Remember that good people sometimes come in last.

This is something that is hard to comprehend. In a perfect world, good things would always happen to good people. But, this isn’t a perfect world and sometimes the good people suffer the most. Want my advice? Pray about it.

3)   Remember that being smart is always more important than having fun.

Having fun and going out to parties is awesome, duh. But you gotta be smart about it. Don’t get yourself in trouble, don’t trust people you don’t know and don’t expect someone to always be there to take care of you. Be an adult. Even though sometimes it sucks.

4)   Realize that you can’t control other’s actions. All you can control is how you handle situations.

“Your mind plays an important role in your victory. Think thoughts that will add power to your life, not ones that will drain your energy.” Just rise above it and let it go. Train your mind to say ‘ehhh, no thanks, I ain’t worryin’ about that today.’ Some people don’t even need your energy to tear them down, they will self destruct on their own.

5)   Just because you’re offended, doesn’t mean you’re right.

You have to learn to be open to new changes and opinions. Choose your battles.

Learning and practicing these five things will help you to be successful. These five things set the men apart from the boys and the women from the girls.

Happy Adulting!
