Best Boone Views for Fall

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at App State chapter.

Mountaineers know how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful place as Boone, North Carolina. Boone is perfect in every season, though some may disagree come winter time, however, we all can agree that when fall hits Boone it is unlike any other. When the crisp air hits us in the face, we can cuddle up in sweaters and scarves, pumpkin spice lattes are a must and, of course, we look at the stunning scenery.  Because winter is such a LONG season for our little town, it is important to enjoy the few weeks of fall while we can. We are lucky to live in the rolling mountains and breathe in the fall air, so we might as well take advantage! Find your favorite location and get outside!

Rough Ridge, Blue Ridge Parkway

Rough Ridge is a short hike (about 1 mile,) but is a little rigorous, however, once you get to the top of this trail, you will realize why the hike was worth it! The views are out-of-this-world and if you are feeling a little adventurous, you can sit on the edges of large rocks that overlook miles and miles of mountainous terrain. Rough Ridge does not take up a lot of your day to explore, but it gives you views (and photos!) that you can enjoy for a lifetime!

Howard’s Knob, Boone

Howard’s Knob is close to campus and has a fantastic overlook of the entire town of Boone. This is a favorite spot of many colliegettes because it is easy to access and is just a short walk to the overlook. Howard’s Knob is maintained by the Watauga Parks & Recreation Department and is only open through October with weather permitting! So get out there and see the amazing views of the town of Boone!

Price Lake, Blue Ridge Parkway

Price Lake is my personal favorite spot in Boone and the surrounding area. Every time I take the drive out there I can’t help but to be blown away by how beautiful the mountains are wrapped around the lake. The lake has a flat trail that circles around it, so even inexperienced hikers will have no problem enjoying the scenery. Also, the lake is open to kayaks and canoes with a campsite very nearby.

Roan Mountain, NE Tennessee

Roan Mountain State Park is located in Tennessee and takes about an hour drive to get to, but the uniqueness of this trail is amazing. The trail goes over a series of “bald” mountains, which means that they lack trees and other vegetation except for grass. Because of this, throughout the entire hike you can see spectacular views without trees to block your vision. Roan Mountain State Park also offers campsites as well as a variety of outdoor activities including hiking, backpacking, camping, cross-country skiing (during snowy, winter months), fishing, and a heated swimming pool that is open from Memorial Day to mid-August.

It is important to take advantage of the scenery Boone has to offer, especially being an upperclassman. We won’t be around Boone for much longer so get out there and explore!
