DIY T-shirt Scarf – Fringe Edition

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at App State chapter.

Confession: I’m addicted to scarves and crafts.
Confession: I’m absolutely terrible at crafts.

Y’all, I really do love crafts and my newfound addiction to Pinterest has fueled my desire to be crafty. However, I honestly have absolutely no talent when it comes to making crafts. Imagine my surprise when I came across a craft that I could actually complete, and it is a craft that combines both of my addictions: a do-it-yourself t-shirt fringe scarf!

Aside from being easy, this craft combines the two things Appalachian is known for: recycling and cold weather. You reuse the t-shirt and then you’re prepared for cold weather! It’s perfect!

Seriously, the only things you need are an old t-shirt and a pair of scissors.

Step #1: Cut the t-shirt underneath the armpits.

Like this!

Step #2: Start making vertical cuts towards the hem of the shirt. The length of the cut will be based on your preference. Originally, my cuts were too short so I went back and made them longer.

Step #3: Pull the strips down to make them a bit longer. This also helps the strips look a little more unified.
Step #4: (Optional step) You can tie the end of each strand to add more of a polished look to the scarf.

Step #5: Wear with pride and stay warm without sacrificing cuteness!

Looking back, there is one major thing that I would have done differently: I would have used good scissors. This would have helped with making the strands as similar as possible. I just grabbed a pair of scissors off the desk and cut the shirt. It doesn’t look bad (that’s my biased opinion) but I definitely wish I would have cut it better.

Overall, I’m happy with how the scarf turned out. If I make another one, it’ll definitely be in Appalachian State colors to wear to the games as the weather turns chilly.

And thanks to Colin Keyes for taking these amazing pictures! I definitely couldn’t have made them look like he did.
