Prepare yourselves for the breakup of the century. Last week, one of Hollywood’s most famous and loved couples announced that they are getting a divorce.
Angelina Jolie and husband Brad Pitt revealed on September 20 that they are parting ways after 12 years together. The announcement came five days after the couple formally separated, citing irreconcilable differences for the split.
Jolie, 41, and Pitt, 52, were married two years ago at their chateau in France after a 10-year relationship.
The couple met in 2003 on the set of the hit film Mr. and Mrs. Smith, where they played a pair of married spies contracted to kill each other. While Pitt was married to actress Jennifer Anniston at the time, Jolie commented how the costars grew close over the course of filming.
“We found this strange friendship and partnership that kind of just suddenly happened,” Jolie said of filming with Pitt in 2006. “We found a lot of joy in it together and a lot of real teamwork… We just became kind of a pair.”
“Brangelina” officially became a thing in 2004 after Pitt and Anniston separated and divorced. After “Brangelina” began, the couple began their family, as Pitt legally became father to Jolie’s adopted children Maddox and Zahara. In 2006, Jolie and Pitt welcomed their daughter Shiloh, and adopted another son Pax in 2007. The next year, the pair completed their family of eight with the birth of twins Knox and Vivienne.
Over the next several years, the pair enjoyed their partnership with world travels, directorial debuts, and numerous humanitarian efforts.
In 2014, Pitt and Jolie held a private, family-oriented marriage ceremony at their home in France.
After their announcement of the split, Jolie and Pitt have faced swirling rumors about what exactly caused the famous couple to part ways.
One rumor concerned Pitt and Allied costar Marion Cotillard. Several gossip magazines have reported that Pitt and Cotillard developed an intimate relationship while filming their new movie. Some tabloids even went so far as to claim that Jolie hired a private investigator to spy on the two.
Both Cotillard and the former couple have publicly denied the rumors. The day after the split was announced, Cotillard broke news that she is expecting her second child with partner Guillame Canet. The actress took to Instagram to defend her platonic relationship with Brad and to wish the pair the best through this “tumultuous time.”
Many other tabloids are claiming that Pitt abused his children, after it was revealed that the actor is under DCFS investigation. Allegations claim that Pitt engaged in potentially dangerous behavior while in the presence of his children on a private flight from France to the United States. Sources close to the former couple state that Pitt is taking the claims very seriously, and is cooperating with the investigation to the fullest extent.
Reps for both Jolie and Pitt have emphasized the actors’ wishes to protect their children throughout the divorce. Statements made by the two reflect their love for their children and their desire for privacy during this time.
While the world is sad to hear about the end of Brangelina, we will always thank the two for giving us 12 years of relationship goals and starting the trend of tacky couple names.
