College is a tough time. With the stress of school, work, internships, projects, clubs and everything else, it’s almost a miracle that college students can keep from going insane for a full four, and sometimes five years! Many times, we’ve all wanted to give up. It is so easy to fall into the trap of not showing up for classes, turning assignments in late, and sometimes, not turning assignments in at all. All it takes is a few “off” weeks to completely sabotage an entire semester of hard work.
We’ve all gone to the dark depths of our mind, where we research the salary of fast food workers, strippers, and most often, yes- drug dealers. It can’t be that hard right? You know the metric system.
What keeps us going? Intrinsic motivation. In college, no one holds your hand or guides you along the way. College is all about your personal desire to do well. The Her Campus team wanted to share some of their personal motivations and inspirations to keep going in college with you!
I’ve kept myself going by reminding myself that no one else in my family had the opportunity to go to college like I did. By doing well in college, I feel that I am bringing honor and pride to my family.
What has kept me motivated throughout college is knowing that at the end of the day, this degree that I am working so hard for will make me a better person! Knowing that I have set a goal and can achieve it is the idea that I never lose sight of.
Whenever I’ve faced a tough time in college my Mom has stepped in to be a huge motivator for me. Her motto is “This too shall pass,” and she always reminds me of that quote and it helps me remember that a bad grade is just a little bump in the road and better days are ahead!
My mom and dad, and my nana and bompa have always been the people I turn to when I’m facing a tough time. Nana reminds me “this too shall pass”, Bompa encourages me to find peace with guidance from the Lord, Momma and Daddy are always there to talk me down from a ledge when I feel like I just can’t do it. They constantly remind me how far I have come and are always so supportive and encouraging! I also love how my two majors overlap and I have light bulb moments during a class that show me that I chose the right path, and that one day all of the blood, sweat, tears, and copious amounts of coffee will pay off when I’m helping people through their toughest times.
I always just remember that the big test I’m scared about wont matter at this time next year. My parents always encourage me to study but they say at the end of the day, it’s just a test!
…Also I keep my self going by looking forward to the weekends.
There you have it! Reach inward, and find YOUR internal motivation to keep going!
Call your parents, and don’t be afraid to reach out to others when you’re feeling stressed. Take time for yourself, and most of all, stay organized and on the straight and narrow in regard to what you have to get done right away.
And when it comes, don’t be scared of finals week, just know you’re that much closer to the end of another great semester. On the same hand, don’t rush things! College is one of the best times of your life, and no one should be eager to pay bills or be an adult (ew).
For now, remember why you’re here, what you really want.
You got this girl. YGG.
