From the flapper dresses of the 1920s to the questionable paisley shirts of the 70s, fashion has evolved over time. The history of fashion has given us many unique trends, both iconic and some very unflattering ones. Now I could go and search these iconic fashion trends that are making their way back into stores and closets, but as a fashion guru and someone who is making a career out of it, I thought I’d highlight my personal favorites.Â
- Bell-Bottom Jeans
-
Now, I have a personal vendetta with this specific trend. When I was in elementary and middle school, I would wear bell bottoms all the time with these super cute brown, leather boots. I was more of an outsider, I wasn’t popular, and I only hung around the same friends I had since kindergarten. If you didn’t own a tracksuit or a cute mini skirt with a choker necklace, you weren’t cool. Well, just look who was trendy before it was cool; I was ahead of the times. That 1960s and 70s classic trend is back and better than ever. Brands have made this trend their own and added cute details like prints, rips, and distressed looks. When this trend first became popular in the 60s and 70s, bell-bottoms were more of a bohemian and hipster look, now you can match bell-bottoms with just about anything.Â
- Bucket Hats
-
Bucket hats are back in style, who would’ve thought? Not me. If I’m being completely honest with you, I never understood why people loved them so much back in the 90s and early 2000s. I guess I wasn’t as revolutionary with this trend as I was with bell bottoms. Much like many of you, I spend most of my days – obviously – scrolling through Tiktok, and that’s when I saw the cutest little bucket hat ever. As I kept scrolling, I saw another bucket hat, and another, and I thought, am I missing something? Bucket hats are everywhere again, in magazines, billboards, runways, stores, and now in my closet. There’s a variety of different styles, patterns, and materials to choose from and they can go with anything if you style it correctly. It’s perfect for any season. If it’s cold, get a fuzzy one, for spring and summer they’re perfect for blocking the sun and it looks cute too, trust me.
- Puffer Winter Coats
-
This is another childhood nightmare of mine. My family and I are from the Jersey-Philly area and know a thing or two about snow and freezing cold weather. So we had some pretty big coats. Sometimes I can’t tell if it’s really me in our old family photos or just a big purple marshmallow. I used to despise those puffy coats growing up, when we moved to North Carolina, my mother made me go to school in this ridiculous white puffy coat, that really did make me look like a marshmallow. One day, I finally convinced my parents that I needed a little Northface fleece because that’s what all the kids were wearing at my school. Well, here we are again, another trend that I technically was already rockin’ before it was cool again. Now every time I walk through the campus quad and see these nice puffy winter jackets, I internally slap myself in the face for making a joke out of that trend. Seriously though, invest in a puffy winter jacket because they’re trendy and very warm.Â
So, if you take anything from this article, let it be the fact that I was ahead of the fashion game before it was cool – only kidding. Fashion is very innovative, but it can also borrow from the iconic trends of the past. So, before you judge your grandmother’s old pantsuit shoulder pads or your dad’s “neat” sneakers, remember they could just be the next iconic trend.
