Keeping In Touch Over The Summer

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at App State chapter.

The school year has had its ups and downs, and where would any of us be without our amazing college buddies? Most of us would have probably gone insane if we hadn’t met people that allowed us to vent about things like annoying roommate habits, dating drama, and stressful class projects. If these are friends that live nowhere near you, keeping in touch over the summer can seem a bit overwhelming. Maybe they live out of state or will be studying abroad, making communication a sticky situation. Here are just a few tips on how to remain just as close, despite having hundreds of miles between you:

1.  Social media.

The first tip is one of the most obvious, since most college students are constantly using their smart phones. If you feel lonely or haven’t heard from your college besties in a while, it doesn’t hurt to post a cute picture on their Facebook wall of something that reminds you of an inside joke! Send them funny Youtube videos that remind you of them, and let them know how much you already can’t wait to be back at school just to see them again.

2. Care packages.

Sending a care package is a fun option to say “In case you need a pick-me-up”, (as long as you know your friend’s address of course). You can put fun crafts in the package like a decorated picture frame with a favorite group photo and several of their most loved snacks. An alternative could be your own version of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants where you and your friends send a meaningful item to each other throughout the summer.

3. Skype sessions.

Skyping has gone under the radar since we have all kinds of apps that allow you to video chat. Nothing beats the old fashioned method though, and you can have fun Skype dates while watching the same movie on Netflix. It’ll almost feel like you’re together again like old times! There are some awesome classic chick flicks on Netflix that you and your friends can quote all the good parts to, reminding you of all the nights you spent goofing off just like this.

4. Road trips.

This is a great option if you live close enough to your friends and are comfortable with driving a certain distance to see them. Plus, it’s an excuse to visit a state or city you haven’t been to before! You’ll get to experience a new place the way a local would, and they’ll know the best little known places to eat and local boutiques to shop at.Â
