Meet Radio Personalities Brad and Kate: The Dynamic Duo

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at App State chapter.

Name: Bradlee Mikeska and Katie Cronin

Year: Super Senior and Sophomore

Major: Electronic Media/Broadcasting

Hometown: Dallas, Texas and Iron Station, NC

Q: So first off…what is your show about?

Kate: Our show is modeled after an ‘advice column’ that you would usually find in the newspaper, but since we did it on the radio, not only do we discuss their questions and offer advice but we also match a song to their situation to give it more of a personal touch.

Q: How did you both come up with it and what makes you two a good duo?

Brad: We both wanted to do a show, but never moved forward with it. Katie texted me late one night screaming how brilliant of an idea she had, but of course, she needed my help to make it happen. Thus a show was born. What makes us a great duo is that we are good friends off the air, and are complete opposites in MANY areas, but have a lot of same core values at heart. We share similar thoughts on people, morals and how they should behave, but we both have extremely different backgrounds to get to that point.

Q: What kind of music do you get to play?

Kate: We play a wide variety of music. Like I said earlier, we play music that matches the situation that is presented to us, which is usually based on lyrics; therefore we end up playing all genres.

Q: What is the craziest phone call you have ever received?

Brad: The weirdest phone call…a guy named Paul was cheating on his girlfriend, or so she thought. She called in and told us her situation and what she felt was going on. We set up a phone call to let him know that he won a “prize” and we would mail the gift to the person of his choosing. It was a flower basket, and while we had his GIRLFRIEND on the line, he told us the address of his side chick…Needless to say, she wasn’t very happy, and Paul slept in the dog house for a few weeks.

Q: What are your jobs at the radio station? Also, what are you both involved in besides WASU?

Brad: I’m the Sports Director for 90.5 WASU, but I’m also co-host of the morning show “Wake Yosef Up” and SportsWrapp. Outside of WASU I’m the PR representative for NBS and also work for Clear Channel Media+Entertainment in Charlotte as part of their promotions team. (Channel 96-1, 96.9 The Kat, 99.7 The Fox, 106.5 The End, 102.9 The Lake).

Kate: I’m the promotions director for WASU, which entails all the events outside of the radio station (tailgating, campus events, charity, etc…also all of the giveaways and basically anywhere you see our logo). Outside of the radio station I am an Ambassador and I’m involved with campus ministries, mainly Elevation as well as Homecoming Committee and Communication Department Honors.

Q: What is your favorite part about working there?

Brad: Everyone is one big family at WASU. We aren’t all identical but we have a common goal, to succeed in our future. We have people that are interested in a number of different areas of broadcasting/entertainment, but we are all one big family and have become the closest of friends.

Kate: Being in promotions, you get involved in a lot of different organizations, events, and people that you might not ordinarily interact with, and I just love meeting new people and making someone’s day when they win free prizes.

Q: What are both of your dream jobs?

Brad: My dream job would have to be doing Play by Play for the Houston Astros Major League Baseball team. I have always had a love of sports, and to get paid to do that would be amazing. Also President of the United States, let’s be honest…that’d be really cool too, but my background would surface, and that’s no fun for anyone to see.

Kate: My dream job is to be an anchor on a nationally televised morning show (hopefully Good Morning America or the Today show), and then from there host my own talk show or late night show.

Q: If you had your own radio talk show what would it be?

Brad: My dream “radio” job would be a blend of humor and sports. It would be centralized in sports, but have everyday conversation with celebrities like Ryan Seacrest, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Brooklyn Decker, Kate Upton, etc., you know, good looking people.

Kate: If I had my own it would probably be very similar to mine and Bradlee’s simply because my favorite part of radio is being able to interact with people and lift their spirits, and having a talk show based on your audience is a really good way to do that.

Don’t miss the one and only Brad and Kate Tuesday nights at 8, exclusively on WASU!
