An Open Letter To Moms: We Couldn’t Have Done It Without You

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at App State chapter.

Saturday, May 9, 2015 is the day I have been counting down since my senior year began. At four o’clock in the afternoon, I will be walking across the stage and finally earning my degree that I’ve worked so hard for. This weekend also happens to be Mother’s Day Weekend. Sadly, this will be my last piece for Her Campus so I wanted to write an open letter to all the moms whose little babies are also graduating this weekend. Even though this is our big moment, it’s also yours

Since we started school in Kindergarten to graduating from college, we’ve had our teachers and professors to guide us along the way. But our biggest fans, supporters and teachers have always been our moms. You’ve cheered us on at countless talent shows, sporting events, and any other extracurriculars we just had to do. You’ve supported us through the awkward middle school days that came with a questionable wardrobe and bratty attitude. Most importantly, you’ve taught us life’s biggest lessons that will guide us forever. We know you’re proud of us for reaching this huge milestone, but we also know there is a little bit of sadness behind your happiness–we are finally going to be on our own. Many of us will be moving away from home to find jobs and start our own lives, either on our own or with a significant other. Don’t stop encouraging us; we will always need your advice and support. If it weren’t for your constant love and encouragment, we would not have made it this far.

Thank you mom for always listening to my rants and complaints about school, but never letting me accept failure as an option.

Thank you mom for always encouraging me, helping me learn, and making me believe that I was worth a higher education.

Thank you mom for always telling me I can do it when I tell you how stressed I am, and reminding me how far I’ve come since my freshman year.

Thank you mom for nagging me. Because even if I said, “I knew that already,” I didn’t.

Thank you mom for being there through all of the heartbreaks, always reminding me to never settle and hold out for my prince charming.

Thank you mom for being on board with my crazy dreams, no matter how unrealistic they may be. You’ve always encouraged me to go above and beyond.

Thank you mom for letting me make my own mistakes. No matter how wrong, they have molded me into the woman I am today.

Thank you mom for showing me so much love that I can in return show to someone else.

Thank you mom for never letting me judge anyone by their skin color or where they come from. Because you have an open mind and heart, I do too.

Thank you mom, for everything. I could not have done it with you.

Happy Mother’s Day!
