A Review of The Hunger Games

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at App State chapter.

The Hunger Games opened this past weekend grossing $155 million dollars, ranking third overall, just below #1 Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 and #2 The Dark Knight.  This isn’t that shocking between the best selling books that inspired the movie and the hype surrounding the movie that has been building over the past year since the trailer was released.

Although The Hunger Games has been constantly compared to franchise movies series like Harry Potter and Twilight, it couldn’t be more different.  Simply put, The Hunger Games is a battle between 24 tributes, one boy and one girl, from the 12 Districts of Panem.  The story follows Katniss Everdeen as she is selected as a tribute and must take part in this battle to the death. Forget Team Peeta or Team Gale, Team Katniss is where it’s at because this is one bad ass girl!  This movie is a must see.  Trust me!

It’s not gender specific and is a great story full of action, drama, emotion, and even some comedy.  Having read the book before seeing the movie, I think that the movie was really good and very entertaining! However, I would encourage everyone to read to book as well.  The book is very complex, so in order to keep it from being a 9 hour movie (which I would have seen), this film only scratched the surface at the greatness of The Hunger Games series.  I was very impressed with the casting and acting.  The movie really made this story come to life and I am so intrigued to see what the next movie will be like!  I would say that this is one bandwagon that everyone should get on board with because there is so much more to come and, as Effie Trinket would say, “may the odds be ever in your favor.”
