A Runner’s Must-Haves for Race Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at App State chapter.

Well App State Collegiettes, the first day has come and gone and, sadly, our forecast sports nothing but snow for the next 5 days. But, fingers crossed, warmer weather should be right around the corner and we all know what that means…it’s race season!

For running enthusiasts like myself, there is nothing better than breathing in spring’s warm refreshing air and feeling the sunshine on your shoulders as you enjoy a nice long outdoor run. Personally, I cannot wait to get off the treadmill and back on the pavement. With my first 10k (6.2 miles) rapidly approaching in Charleston in 2 weeks, there is still a lot of work that needs to be done. Preparing for a race, no matter the distance, requires discipline, endurance and, of course, a few race essentials that every runner should have. After all, even if you’re not a runner by nature, looking the part can have some serious motivating effects!

1. The Right Running Shoe for You

It’s important to remember that shoes are just as different as the people wearing them. Our feet all have different shapes and structures and require different designs for optimal comfort. Since the shoe is arguably to most important piece of equipment used by a runner, take the time to figure out which shoe is right for you. I recommend visiting a local shoe store where you can get fitted and measured for the perfect shoe. At their cheapest, a good pair of running shoes can cost around $100 dollars and rise as high as $300. Choose wisely Collegiettes, a comfortable or uncomfortable shoe can make or break your running routine.

2. A Great Wrist Watch

Running outdoors means you lose the ability to set your pace and track your mileage. A wristwatch allows you to seamlessly track your progress without going through the hassle of messing with your phone or iPod during your run. These watches are so advanced; they allow you to save all the data from your run and access it from your computer after you’re done. Starting around $100, a wristwatch is a must have for all runners.

3. A Flashy Outfit

Who says running and fashion don’t mix? These days, running apparel is designed to scream, “Look at me”. Believe it or not, a center of attention uniform can actually boost your confidence on the course and motivate you to run faster and longer. Look for apparel that is light, breathable, and comfortable. Most importantly, do not wait until the day of your race to run in your new clothes. A bothersome or unexpectedly uncomfortable outfit can make every mile of your run unbearable.

4. An Upbeat Playlist

There’s nothing better than a great playlist of tunes to set the pace for your run. Building the perfect mix will take some time but is totally worth it. If your motivation is lacking prior to your run, a great set of songs is sure to transform your workout from boring to upbeat in a matter of seconds.

5. A Positive Attitude!

Sometimes the best motivation is just believing that YOU CAN DO IT! Approaching every workout with confidence and an upbeat attitude can increase your endurance and make your run ten times more enjoyable. Set a goal and go for it! After all, who says sweating can’t be fun?!

Happy running Collegiettes!
