5 Foods That Benefit Your Body and Skin

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Arizona chapter.

Ads on TV and in magazines have creams, ointments and other psychotic products that promise they can stop time so you won’t get wrinkles till you’re 50-years-old while others are “scientifically proven” to give you the best results in as early as three days. Don’t believe it; better yet don’t waste your money on it! The best products for your skin could be in your cupboard at home right now. Here are 5 foods that not only have different benefits for your skin, but for your body as well!

Dark Chocolate

“Cocoa hydrates your skin, making it firmer and more supple,” stated David Bank, MD, a dermatologist in Mount Kisco, New York. It “also contains high levels of flavonols, a potent type of antioxidant,” added Nicholas Perricone, MD, a dermatologist in New York City. Eating a couple of squares every day or every two days should heighten luminosity of your skin. Remember, eating more than that will only conclude in more fat intake and possible acne so be careful with the portion size!

Yogurt

Protein from dairy helps your skin become firmer so fewer wrinkles appear; therefore you’re wrinkle-free for longer. Why would you spend hundreds of dollars on anti-wrinkle cream when you can have a nutritious snack, prevent wrinkles and only spend about $3 for a tub? To get the best results for smoother complexion, eat a single serving a day. Also, adding fresh fruit like strawberries, blueberries and/or raspberries never hurt either!

Walnuts

“Walnuts contain omega-3 essential fatty acids, which can improve skin’s elasticity,” according to Dr. Bank. They also contain copper which is a mineral that boosts collagen production. Try eating a handful every day to improve your skin’s texture. Who doesn’t want soft skin? Don’t go through every aisle trying different moisturizers at the drug store, try a bag of these first.

Kidney Beans

They contain high levels of zinc and studies have proven a correlation between blemishes and low zinc levels. Zinc has healing properties so having a four-ounce serving of these magic beans will help your skin be blemish-free. It is also shown that topical zinc is as effective against acne as antibiotics are.

Green Tea

We’ve heard a lot about this miracle tea like how it speeds metabolism, reduces the risk of cancer and many more. Well, here’s one more: it reduces redness in your skin. “It is very high in antioxidants, particularly one named EGCG, which is proved to reduce redness,” said Jeffrey Morrison, MD, nutrition consultant for Equinox Sports Clubs in New York City. Studies have also shown that green tea helps fight inflammation,” according to Dr. Banks. Drink at least one cup a day and the redness will wither away. Many drinks green tea with added sugar and although it will still help you, it doesn’t have the strongest effect. The bitterness is what tricks your mind and tummy that you’re full so you eat less. And remember: eating sugar only makes you crave more sugar so skip it to feel the best results!
