Every year a number of us single women pray to skip the dreaded Valentine’s Day. A day to make the singles of today’s society depressed about their loneliness but what for? Even when you’re in a relationship do your ideals on the holiday truly change? It’s always nice not to be alone, but no one said this had to be a lonely holiday. Spending many hours curious of how those in a relationship felt,I decided to ask those cute couples all about it. Is Valentine’s Day for women the equivalent to the Superbowl for men? [Mind all of you readers out there; each of these interviews was taken separately]
Name: Megan Kelley
Hometown: Phoenix, Arizona
Year: Sophomore
Major: Public Health
Name: Jason Stone
Hometown: Los Angeles, California
Year: Senior
Major: Political Science
Relationship status: Been together one year.
HC: What is your ideal way to spend Valentine’s Day?
Megan:To not observe Valentine’s Day and not making the day any different than how we usually spend our Monday’s.
Jason:There’s nothing special about the holiday, it’s like any other day.
HC: How will you be spending the holiday?
Megan:I’ll be taking Jason to dinner. He’s always too stubborn to let me pay so I didn’t really give him a choice this time around.
Jason:I’ll possibly have some surprises for her, it depends on the mood of the day, I’ve got to see if that warm, fuzzy feeling is still there.
HC: What would you rather be doing?
Megan:I think it’s a hallmark holiday, it’s overrated and I’ve never really cared for it so I guess I’d rather just spend the day as if it were no different than other days. We usually go to dinner every Monday night anyways.
Jason:It’s a fun time people can have, a time to show the person you’re with you appreciate them. I’d probably rather be watching Glee and playing chess with friends though. Meg and I usually spend time giving my roommates girl advice because they struggle with women and this holiday. Meg brings them flowers and cookies.
Name: Danielle Wertheim
Hometown: Dallas, Texas
Year: Junior
Major: Accounting
Name: Mike Elyachar
Hometown: Kansas City, Kansas
Year: Senior
Major: Business Management
Relationship status: Been together 11 months.
HC: What is your ideal way to spend Valentine’s Day?
Danielle:Just hanging out, maybe grabbing dinner but mostly low-key and spending time together.
Mike:Dinner at a nice restaurant and a movie.
HC: How will you spending the holiday?
Danielle:Dinner I’m sure, probably at Pei Wei, we went there last year as friends and so possibly we’ll go again.
Mike:Last year we went to Pei Wei as friends, so going back this year would make it a tradition I guess. Usually there is so much pressure on the guy but Danielle has been sure to remind me there is no pressure.
HC: What would you rather be doing?
Danielle:Well really I have nothing else to do but study so I’d still rather spend the time together.
Mike:I’d still be down for a movie and dinner, maybe instead stay in and watch the Glee Valentine’s Day episode I TIVOED.
As I sat and talked with each of these couples I realized one thing. Although it is nice to be in a relationship, Valentine’s Day is not always about having someone to be with but having people you care about to spend time with. To all the single ladies out there, take this night not to sulk but instead have some girls over, make dinner, pop open a bottle of wine and appreciate having your friends.
