Sororities and fraternities across the University of Arizona campus came together last week and competed in various Greek Week competitions.
Â
“Greek Week was a week-long competition between teams of fraternities and sororities that was intended to unite Greek Life chapters,” said Lexi Shinn, a co-chair of Greek Sing.
Â
Ten circles of chapters competed together, consisting of both fraternities and sororities, which set this event apart from other Greek events, where teams are normally separated between organizations.
Â
Â
The schedule of events started off with a banner competition on Monday, Greek Sing on Friday, Greek Olympics and a knowledge bowl on Saturday, and a philanthropic event known as Up Til’ Dawn on Sunday.
Â
Greek Sing was a talent show that allowed chapters to compete individually or with their designated circles. The talents were all dance-based, but a few participants added other thematic elements and instruments to their acts.
Â
After entertaining performances featuring cars, boy bands, and horses, two winners were announced. The winner of the individual chapter bracket was Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.
Â
“This was the first event that the 2013 spring line of our sorority actually had the chance to participate in something that the whole school was able to attend,” said Alexyz Liggins, a member of AKA. “It was a great way of getting our name out there.”
Â
On Saturday the ten circles competed against each other physically, in a series of athletic challenges on the mall, and later mentally in a Knowledge Bowl trivia competition.
Â
Finishing out the week, almost 1,800 people came together on Sunday to participate in Up Til’ Dawn, a national philanthropic event, where college students raise money for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. Participants in Greek Week wrote letters throughout the day in an effort to raise money for the cause.  Â
Â
“Overall, I think the events went great,” said Shinn. “The committee who put together the week was very happy with the results!”
