“I’m Bored…”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Arizona chapter.

Picture this: It’s Friday night. Normally, like many (if not most) U of A students, you very well may be getting ready to go out partying. Whether it’s a frat party, house party, or a kick-back, there is no shortage of “get-togethers” on the weekends here. Pretty much everyone loves a good party, but sometimes the time comes to relax for a weekend. Perhaps you have a huge paper or test on Monday, or you’re just really sick of constantly feeling hungover. You want to chill out, but you don’t want to hang out in your room all night. If you’re in this situation, you’re in luck! There are actually things to do on campus on the weekends besides party. There are a ton of activities that offer a safe, sober alternative for non-partiers or those who need a break.

1.  Nearly every other weekend, Gallagher Theater in the Union offers a $3 movie. Past showings have included movies like Horrible Bosses, Bridesmaids, Friends with Benefits and The Help. It’s a great deal for only $3, and there are multiple showings Thursday through Sunday. Grab some friends to grab some food in the union, and enjoy a movie in the beautiful Gallagher Theater!

2.  This might sound boring to some, but there are tons of art exhibits happening on campus all the time. If you’re interested in art, head down to UA’s very own Art Museum, located near the Harvill building. There are also galleries located in the Student Union which have exhibits going on all the time. You probably won’t be able to kill 5 hours in a gallery, but the exhibits are a great way to learn about other cultures and learn something new!
2.
3.  Fun fact: Football and basketball aren’t the only sports at UA! Keep an eye on the athletics website (www.arizonawildcats.com) for schedules for other sports. During the big sports seasons, of course, University Boulevard is the place to be. Frog and Firkin, Gentle Ben’s and many other restaurants show the games on TV, have tons of great food specials, and it’s a great way to socialize off campus (but not too far)!

4.  Are games your forte? The Park Student Union as well as the main SUMC offer Texas Hold ‘Em Poker Tournaments on weekday and weekend evenings. It’s a $5 entry fee and you have the chance to win great prizes. The Games Room in the Union also has pool tournaments often. More of a video games gal? CODE, located in the PSU, also has X-box tournaments throughout the semester as well.
4.
5.  If you live in a residence hall, there’s more than likely a program of some sort happening in your dorm on the weekends. These are often movie nights, ping-pong tournaments, pizza parties or game nights. What’s better than free food and fun at the convenience of being in your own dorm? If there aren’t any programs going on, the weekends are a great time to get to know the people in your dorm, especially if you spend most of your nights outside of the hall. You can make dinner with your floor mates, watch a movie with your RA, or make plans to get fro-yo with some hall mates you don’t know too well.

Above all, you can never go wrong with movie nights, girl’s nights, or just getting ahead (or caught up) on homework. There’s no shame in having a low-key weekend; in fact, it’s often necessary! I promise, staying in for a weekend won’t hurt. There will be other frat parties, and your friends will forgive you for choosing to let yourself relax and rejuvenate. Have a great weekend, collegiettes!
